Question about start time after auto-pause

I have an Edge 530 and the Garmin speed sensor and cadence sensor. The speed sensor is on the front hub. I also have a Planet Bike Protege 8 wired cyclometer with the magnet on the front wheel. I did a very precise wheel roll-out measurement and entered the same wheel size in both the Garmin and the Planet Bike. While riding the mileage is exactly the same to the hundredth of the mile. When I stop both units auto pause. When I start again the Planet Bike unit picks up from the first wheel rotation but the Garmin takes a bit of time (several wheel rotations - probably 20 or 30 ft) before resuming. On a short ride it isn't much of a difference. On a long ride it starts adding up. Every stop the Garmin gets further behind. I just did a 65 mile ride and the Garmin was about a quarter mile behind the Planet Bike and also a quarter mile behind my buddies Bontrager and his Strava via an iPhone. Is this a fixable issue or just another Garmin "feature"? Thans.

  • 2 things...  The 530 probably has the auto pause set to default i.e. 3 mph.  That means the recordings don't begin until you get up to speed.  You can set this for any speed you want within the unit.

    2nd, stop obsessing about a 1/4 mile on a 65 mile ride.

  • Auto-pause is set to "When stopped", not a speed setting. 1/4 mile might not seem like much but I like electronic devices to be exact and it isn't. Of course, over enough miles it starts adding up also.

  • Activity Profile > Timer Start Mode.   Is this set to the default 6mph?

  • Yep, it says Auto: 6.00 mph. I've tried setting it lower but it says invalid, that 6 mph is the lowest. It seems to me that if you have the wheel sensor it should start as soon as the wheel is turning or you should at least have that option.

  • I am by not means a 530 expert so I did a search for "Timer Start Mode" and from that I was able to deduct...  when using auto start it won't start recording until you hit 6mph.  Although the 6mph cannot be changed you can manually push the start button (before you hit 6mph) and recording will begin.

  •  as mentioned, while auto pause is enabled, the Edge will not start recording again until you reach the designated speed. This could result in your overall distance being less over the course of a long ride, especially if there are lots of stops throughout the ride.
