Alerts for nearby POIs or course points: possible for edge 530?

Hi there! I just bought myself a 530. I've been digging on the internet, but I'm getting mixed answers on this. I would really like to mark points on my map to find POIs (watertaps, cafes etc.). What I have tried so far:

1) loading maps from opensteertmap and openfietsmap to show these points. This doesn't really work a these icons are way too small and unclear.
2) I loaded a GPX with POILoader, with all (Dutch) watertaps in the Netherlands. This doesn't seem to do anything.
3) I marked the points myself with course points in Garmin Connect on my computer. These points do appear on the map on my Garmin, but are really really small (almost invisible). Also there is no proximity alert or message triggered by them.

So my question is: are proximity alerts working on the edge 530 and what is the best way to approach this?

Also a little bonus question: is it possible to turn the sounds for navigation off but keep the rest on? The beeping for every corner is driving me crazy. In the mobile app the option "navigation warnings" is already turned off however.

I'm really happy with the Edge 530, but in comparison with the Elemnt Bolt there is still a lot unclear about what is possible and I'm missing clear instructions for this.

Thank you!

  • I use "Course Points" for anything like this, but, I pay attention to what is coming up on the "Course Points" page so that I know how far away they are from me and what they are, and when within range, they are visible on the map. I also have a "Distance to Crs Pt" data field enabled on my map page so I can see the distance decrease as I approach it.

I also get a text notification on my 530 as well when I am close to it, it flashes up at the bottom, but as sounds on Garmins are barely audible, I do not know if you get a sound alert as well so don't rely on that.

Course points though can only be part of a route/course.

The only other way is to mark your positions using "Locations" but Garmin Connect does not do that, I find Garmin Mapsource best for that, and it then just becomes a case of selecting one and  letting the Garmin navigate a route to it if you need it.

Is the beeping for corners the Sharp bend warning? if so it can be turned off, otherwise it should not be beeping for every corner, mine does not.

  • Thank you for your answer Leginswal! I did some more tests today and it actually works right now (not sure why it didn't at first).
So now I can see the different course points on the map, while riding/navigating, and I do get a text pop-up.

The only problem that I still have right now is the sound. It is not for sharp bends, but I do get a beeping sound when a I'm approaching a turn (any turn) ánd when I'm very close to this turn. So this is quite unnecessary, but the only solution I can see right now is to turn off all sounds, but this also turns off the sounds for my course points notifications.

Anyway, I'm happy I got this working at least.
