Creating a course with segment so that it can pop up during riding

I don't know why if I search "garmin live segment", all blogs talk about "strava segment".I don't want to use the "strava segment", since it's so wired to use another website while most of my devices are under the Garmin Connect, and GC already has it's own courses and segments. So here I have two questions:

1. Is it true that we can only have either one of the two, at the same moment, between "following a course" and "automatic segment pop up screen"? Or there is some operations can let us have both?

2. I saw some one said we should "create a course file with segments in it". But how, I can't find such functionality on the Garmin Connect website at all. There is no "insert segments" button on the "course creating" session.

I'm sure about that all the segments are starred and sent to my device (Edge 530 and Fenix 7), because I can see the PR that I rode in the segment session on the devices. I just can't see the segment screen pop up while riding, as Garmin advertised.

Will be highly appreciate if anyone helps discuss or give a clear answer.

  • I've only been using the segment pop-up feature a couple of days.  So how I use  it may be different that you.  After I've completed a ride Garmin Connect will let me see what segments I rode over on that particular ride.  It also gives me the ability to send that segment to my device.  Now when I approach and cross that segment it will pop-up.

  • Hi El, thank you. A quick question, when you say it will pop-up next time you approach that segment, are you navigating following a course or not?

  • I have not tried it while navigating a course but I do not see any reason why it wouldn't.  My guess is that you send your course to your device and then send the segments to your device.

  • whoops, that's true. So concerning the course, you're thinking I should first send segments and then send course?

  • I don't think it matters.  If you send either to your device it retains them until you delete them from the device.

  • I see. I feel you enlightened me where is the problem. Will go take another try. Appreciate so much!

  • Any update on this?

I don't (want to) use Strava either, and have all segments sent to my Edge 830 and they are enabled on the Edge. In the activity profile the segments are enable, and in the screen settings it is set to show screen and popup when approaching, but this never happens and I can´t find the screen either when riding in a known segment. I can see the leaderboard details on my device.

So why is it not popping up? What do I do wrong?

I noticed I have a lot of segments on connect mobile and on my device, but not on the connect website?

  • I remember it being a thing where you had to build your course with Garmin Connect in order for the Garmin segments to come up while following the course.  Or maybe it was using Strava Route builder in order for Strava segments to show?  Something like that anyway.  Where are your course files coming from?

  • For Strava segments the course must be created using the Strava course creator and sync to Garmin Connect using the Strava/Garmin integration. Strava will embed any starred segments into the course file that the course runs over.

If you use GC segments then you need to create the course using the GC course creator

  • I build the courses mostly in BaseCamp and then import the gpx file on the connect website.

Last week I suddenly saw the segments on the map on my edge, but still didn't popup when following a course.

Yesterday suddenly one segment did popup. I noticed that I made it a favourite. As it was a course i hadn't used for a while, I'm not sure the other segments were actually on the edge, but they were definitely not starred as favourite.

Do the segments need to be starred favourites to popup?

I'll test next time with some of the segments starred and others not.
