Creating a course with segment so that it can pop up during riding

I don't know why if I search "garmin live segment", all blogs talk about "strava segment".I don't want to use the "strava segment", since it's so wired to use another website while most of my devices are under the Garmin Connect, and GC already has it's own courses and segments. So here I have two questions:

1. Is it true that we can only have either one of the two, at the same moment, between "following a course" and "automatic segment pop up screen"? Or there is some operations can let us have both?

2. I saw some one said we should "create a course file with segments in it". But how, I can't find such functionality on the Garmin Connect website at all. There is no "insert segments" button on the "course creating" session.

I'm sure about that all the segments are starred and sent to my device (Edge 530 and Fenix 7), because I can see the PR that I rode in the segment session on the devices. I just can't see the segment screen pop up while riding, as Garmin advertised.

Will be highly appreciate if anyone helps discuss or give a clear answer.

  • I think you're right. I build the courses in BaseCamp and then export a track as GPX that I import on the connect website. Because it was a track, there were probably too many points and not following roads accurate enough. And although I don't have any problems navigating (the course line on the edge is following the correct roads), this is not accurate enough for the edge to recognise the segments as being on the course. When I start this course, I can see one segment, but not the others. When uploding the activity to connect, connect must see that I actually did follow the other segments too, and displays my times on the leaderboard.

I have now rebuild the same route directly on the connect website and when I load this one in my edge, I can see all the segments before I start the course on the segments screen on the edge, so I assume they will popup now.

There is still one segment that isn't displayed here, but by looking at the segment it starts on the other side of the road (where there is no cycling path) so the edge doesn't recognise it as a segment on the course I guess. But later on connect it is still displayed as beinng part of the route after uploading the activity.

So my guess is that segments during a course will only popup if they exactly on the course before you start the activity. If you ride without a course, they popup if your actual location is on the segment.

I still prefer BaseCamp to create/edit my routes, as you have more options there. The strange thing is that using the same method (creating in BaseCamp, exporting the track and import in connect), the edge does pop-up all the climbs on the route, but not the segments... Strange as you would think that this is the same principle. What is the differenct between a climb and a segment?

  • Well I thought I understood, but I just created a course in Connect, sent it to the edge, but when I load the course no segments showing up at all? The segments are on the edge and the course is going exactly over the start/end of the segments. Even if I star them to make them favourites, they don't show up in the segment screen (the screen is not even displayed as the edge thinks there are no segments on this course).

    What's going wrong this time?

  • I had that same problem but I can't remember how I solved it. It was something about the segment had to be sent to the Edge before the course. I'll try to find out what I did to get it to work.

  • Strange it seems so complicated for segments, where I didn't have to do anything for climbs?

But restarting the Edge solved the previous problem, the segments are now linked to the course. So slowly getting there with some segments showing up during my courses, just as I wanted.

Another thing I noticed, since I have enabled all segments I came across to see if I could get it working, some of them overlap. Wondering what the Edge will do if I'm already riding a segment and a new one starts... But I guess I'll find out on my next trip. When I understand better how it works, I can ofcourse remove some of the overlapping segments and only have the ones I'm interested in enabled on the Edge.

  • Just did some trial and error testing. If the segent is not on the Edge before you send the course, it doesn't seem to show in the course no matter what you try after you sent the segment until you re-send the course.

But I had a course I probably made in BaseCamp or got from someone else, and it didn't pick up all the segments (only 2 of 3). Only when I recreated the course in Connect, it picked all 3 up.

So sort of happy, I now know how to get the segments I want in my courses, but it is too complicated and takes way too much time... If there is a new segment, you have to resend the course aswell after you send the segment to your device, or so it seems.

  • It is far too complicated. From what I have read, Wahoo handles segments much better than the Garmin units.
