Edge 530 FW 9.40 - sensors/connectivity issues

Recently, I'm facing issues with sensors connected with Garmin Edge 530, this started to happen after upgrading to 9.40 FW, haven't noticed the issues with the previous FW.

Issue #1 HR Strap is being disconnected during the ride, it's not possible to connect it back during the activity:

HR strap is Garmin HRM Run - new battery inside

Issue #2 Bontrager lights are being disconnected during the ride, it's not possible to connect to back unless the device is being reset.

Issue #3 Bontrager lights wrong battery indicator, I believe this is an old issue but still reporting it here as a sensor issue (https://forums.garmin.com/developer/connect-iq/f/discussion/242959/bontrager-flare-rt-battery-bug/1391573#1391573

@ - are these known issues and if yes when are they going to be fixed?

  • Out of curiosity, was this sensor dropout issue ever resolved for the 530, or did Garmin just give up (as per earlier post)?

I moved to the wahoo boltv2 and am happy, albeit there's a small annoying bug on that as well.

This sensor drop bug which was introduced in a FW update, if not resolved, has paused my interest in the Garmin brand.

  • I think you can assume it's not fixed. There was some release recently but It does not mentions any of this resolved. Generally the quality of updates for me declined just recently, until 9.4 I updated and everything was ok.

  • Thanks @Patryk

I found it highly frustrating that they just didn't roll back to a previous FW version and then fixed it in their own time. That would have been very easy for them to do, noting how essential this function is to most users. I know you can do it manually, but i'm not that capable with this sort of thing and felt i shouldn't need to be.

  • There are 100s of mentions of dropouts etc in the various device forums (including the bright shiny new 1040) so I can only assume that Garmin believes these 100s of users are imagining the dropouts or that they know the issue can't be fixed (a worry then for 1040 and future 540 / 840 users) My 530 & 1040s are perfect for the garmin speed and cadence sensors on the road but both edge devices drop connection to the FEC resistance controller on my Tacx (Garmin) smart trainer which is annoying as it says it is reconnected shortly after but does not respond to grade changes until the Edge device is powered off and on again.

  • My brandnew Edge 530 is not perfect with Garmin speed an cadence sensors. I use nothing but Garmin devices, speed, cadence, HRM an Varia. On every ride there are several sensor drop outs where always ALL sensors lose connection to the Edge. Though they reconnect after a few seconds it's very annoying.

  • I rode many miles with an Edge 530, pretty much since it was first released.   In the early days, the unit was rock solid, but a firmware release sometime a year or so ago introduced the sensor dropout issue, and as far as I know, this has not been corrected.

I mostly experienced the numerous drop-outs while road biking, where I had a Polar HR strap, a Garmin Varia 515 tail light/radar, a Garmin headlight, a Garmin speed sensor, and a Stages left crank power meter connected to the 530.

Again, this only started either late 2020 or into 2021.  It was so aggravating.  The dropout only lasted a few minutes, and most of the paired items would reconnect on their own.  However,  many times the Polar HR strap would never re-connect without a complete re-pairing   Wow, too much.

So, what did I do?  I upgraded to the Garmin Edge 1040 non-solar and sold my 530.  Yeah, I played right into Garmin's strategy.  :)   But, I will say that once Garmin solved the Connect IQ bug that caused sensors to drop on the 1040, it has been solid.   Oh, did you read about the grade lag on the 1040?  lol...

  • I'm going to try turning my phone connection off to see if that makes a difference on my next ride, then rolling back to 9.10 again. My ride on Saturday had horrible dropouts the whole day. Went through this whole hassle back in the spring too.

  • Has anybody tried 9.50 yet?   The change log suggest it fixes some problems with BLE/sensors.
I personally downgraded to 9.10 and have stopped my Edge from automatically downloading updates.

This works great for me, but if 9.50 fixes the problem then maybe I'll update.

  • My ride this weekend was on 9.50 & sensor data was garbage.

  • I had no dropouts with 9.50, but my 530 began restarting spontaneously during rides.
