Strava Live Segment Losing Goal

I have a Strava segment where I have set a a goal time in Strava.  The goal does not appear on the Edge 530, just other times like PR, Rivals, KOM etc.

I delete the segment from the Garmin, and unstar the segment in Strava.  The I reselect the segment, sync to my Garmin, the goal time reappears.  But the next day I see the Goal time has disappeared from the leaderboard again.

Does anyone have any ideas what is going on?

  • Are you using 2 different methods to sync. E.g. Garmin Express and also your phone?

  • No not that I am aware of.  I did use Garmin Connect for a little while to sync segments.  But after I enabled Strava premium, I thought that would turn off automatically.

  • Live Segments have been a mess on the 530 for years.

The default goal never works across all segments, only on some.

Goals change on each segment on their own from time to time.

When it's "fixed",  the next update reverts things back to where nothing works correctly.

One of the most annoying things is that if you're really close to beating whatever goal the 530 picked for you (not your PR), when that goal is reached, a banner goes across the screen letting you know, which completely blocks your progress.

I've contacted Garmin about this countless times & finally just gave up.

    BTW-

I don't have any of these issues on my FR935, but it's difficult to look at my wrist when going for a segment.

  • it looks like my 'goal' has stuck around now for 24 hours.  Lets see if it remains for the next few days.

Does anyone know where this information is stored in the Garmin itself?  I am assuming it is in the fit file for the segment?

Has anyone figured out why the goal disappears?  It could be the fault of Strava, since they push the information to Garmin, and the Garmin can't show data it doesn't have.

  • I'd be shocked if it was a Strava problem.

I've had issues with it on my 530 for years (Although it was fixed for at least a season, then it started picking random goals last spring).

No issues at all with my Forerunner 935, not once

  • Strava do have their issues. They have 2 different sets of APIs for getting leaderboard information. One used by Garmin Connect and the other used by Garmin Connect Mobile. They do not return the same lists.

  • oh interesting... I haven't used the Garmin Connect Mobile app for a while (Android).  Let me fire that up and see if that screws it up.

  • Ha..... there you go.  I turned off Wifi on the device, and deleted the segment.  Then I restarted the device and let is sync to the phone using Bluetooth.

Now my goal is gone!!  So you are probably right

  • From what I recall goal only comes across using Garmin Express to sync. It does not come across using Garmin Connect Mobile or WiFi.

This is why sometimes people see it and then report that it has gone.

This is unfortunately in the Strava court to fix/change, as Garmin can only use what the API returns.

  • Turned off Bluetooth, and just connected via Wifi.  I can confirm that 'goal' comes across via Wifi.  So the wifi connection is enough to get the goal.  You don't get 'recent' though.  Only nearest rival, 'goal', PR and KOM.  If you connect via Bluetooth, you get all the other times, but not 'goal.

Is the 'Strava live segments' menu option a separate app on the phone? (written by Strava)  That would explain why it uses a different API.
