Changing default name of saved tracks?

Hello, I'd like to have another pattern for the saved tracks of may Edge 530. I see no way.

DD.MM.YYYY is not the obvious and simple way to save a file if you would keep track of the generated gpx files. The developers of the GPSMAP66 at least added both variants to save files, even if doubled so....

Any Options to define may own pattern or the desired as pre-configured (YYYY.MM.DD)?

  • The developers of the GPSMAP66 at least added both variants to save files, even if doubled so....

Do the tracks on GPSMAP66 get uploaded to Garmin Connect?

One reason not to provide alternatives to the names might be to be able to figure out what files need to be uploaded.

(Note that the Edges have a limit (200) to the number of activity files they can deal with.)

  •  are these dates that you're referring to the ones while looking at the history on the device itself? (Menu > History > Rides)

If so, there won't be a way to change the format of these dates. If not, would you mind attaching a screenshot so I can see which dates you're referring to and where these are located?

  • Thanks, I tried and the result is a mess for the complete system. This setting affects all parts of software of Windows and applications. Don't do this!

  • Yes, tracks of GPSMAP66 had been provided by the device in the desired naming for copying to Basecamp.

Correction of my answer: both named files are available in file system of GPSMAP66 as track looking on it with Basecamp, not with Windows Explorer. The automatic upload to Garmin Connect only uploaded reasonable each track only once, I assume becaus it's triggered by the fit-files, which are only available once (and this is what is uploaded). I assume, the provided tracks in Basecamp are tracks in gpx converted of fit. In case of GPSMAP66 there seem to run 2 conversions...

  • Pointing to the problem again: I connect my device by wire to the PC and copy the recorded tracks of my Garmin device to the Basecamp database. I want only to copy the newest not copied yet. With naming of Edge I have to search starting by day in a huge number of tracks...Much easier with GPSMAP66, I just select the last not copied to database which are easy to determine because in order of date.

This is what it looks like in BaseCamp direct on the device connected to PC, same when copied to Basecamp database. Highlighted are the two ways of naming provided of the GPSMAP66. I'm not sure if the files have different quality, but each recorded track was available with both namings. After there is in Basecamp no way of sorting by date of recording but only by name, this is a real mess when named by dd.mm.yyyy

  • My 830 saves its log files in the following naming format: YYYY-MM-DD-HH-MM-SS.  The date and time values are the date and time I started the recording.  So did my Edge 800 when I used that.  I have never tried to change the naming scheme.

It could well be the Basecamp software that is displaying the dates in the format in the screenshot and nothing to do with the files themselves.  The fit files themselves are not named like that.

  • Looking on file system of Edge 530 looks like this

Looking on file system of GPSMAP66 looks like this

Fit files seem always stored in desired format, the question is which part of software converts the fit files to the format of basecamp including renaming. But makes no difference for the problem? Basecamp is the latest release as the firmware is..

BTW: The reason why GPSMAP is showing 2 formats in Basecap may be related to the fact of a SD Card storage. Maybe there is a coversion from / for each storage, something like that?

  • Basecamp is probably parsing the date/time in the log files depending on the regional settings that your computer's OS has and not using the file name.  I have no idea why it would be different for the GPSMap unit and the Edge unit though.

  • In case of Edge 530 I can commit the use / influence of OS settings for renaming fit to basecamp. But a change of this setting affects lot of other things, see my post above. This is no solution.
