Any way to avoid the all too often truncated file errors when I upload data from my 530?

This is happening frequently. Running v7 and uploading to a Macbook Air using a USB C adaptor.

Anybody else having this issue and if you've been able to solve it what did you do?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

  • What is the specific error? Could you upload a sample of a file with this condition so we can see what might be going on?

    • Zip the file, then in a reply post Insert >> Image/video/file >> click Upload >> browse for file >> OK.
    • Or upload the fit file to a file sharing service, such as OneDriveGoogle DriveDropbox, etc., make the file public, then paste a link to the file in your post.
  • Thanks for the response. I get a different error message depending on the app I'm trying to upload to.

    • Training peaks givesme a message saying... "The file can't be parsed"
    • Strava's message is..."Unrecognized file type"
    • Golden Cheetah.."File truncated"

Unfortunately I deleted yesterday's file, but here is a file from April 9 of 2021 that is indicative of the problem I am running into...  2021_04_09_13_57_16.csv.zip

I dont care about repairing the file. What I want to know is how I avoid this problem going forward.

Thanks again for any insight you can provide.

  • How are you stopping and saving the activity on the unit?  Are there any errors when syncing with Garmin Express?  Why are you using such an old firmware?

  • I hit stop. Then save. Then I look at the summary. The I power down. I don't synch to Garmin Express. I connect the 530 to my Mac and upload to Strava, TP, and GC. I've not updated the firmware but could that be the issue? I would hope not.

    solved

  • Thanks again. Guessing that it was a Strava or GC file if it wasn't the original. I'll have to wait for it to happen again and then you send the file that was on the 530. Its been happening at least 1x every 10 rides so shouldn't be long.

Have you seen this error before and it so is there something I can do to prevent it? For example should I always upload to Garmin Express adn then drop it into Strava, TP, GC? Should I power down the unit in a certain wayy/sequence? Anything you can recommend? Thx

  • any corrupted fit files in your Garmin\Activities folder will cause uploading, I know with garmin express this would happen, unsure with headunit doing its upload via a wifi connection avoiding ble to connect phone app. Suggestion empty out the activities folder on your garmin(you may have done this and i'm on the wrong track). if you have set the permissions for Garmin->Strava Garmin->trainingpeaks etc should happen automatically. Back to corrupt files when garmin.express checks your activity folder each file read and checked(oldest to newest) if it has been uploaded and any corrupt file just locks the uploading process. I have written my own backup program to move my activities out of the folder so its always empty.

  • Thanks very much for the reply. A friend of mine also recommended that I frequently empty the activities folder because as he put it "Garmins don't like working with low memory", so this is something I've been doing, and unfortunately I'm still having issues.

I will definitely set up my different apps to synch with one another so everything is streamlined. Thanks again for the suggestions.

  • Have you tried to reinstall the GCD file(even to extent of formatting the USB drive), I saw another post for version 7.1 GCD  and also another would be to a device reset see manual https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/edge530/EN-US/GUID-34861F59-6CF2-40AE-8DA4-A484AD8655E8.html as it might clean up your profile that might be the problem.
