Whose idea was it?

In the latest firmware upgrade Garmin has changed the DI2 Battery level field from a numeric percentage to a battery icon which loses black bars as the battery weakens. Who decided that this was a good idea? From what I can see, there are spaces for 5 black bars inside this icon. In the image attached, it looks like my DI2 battery level is at 80%, but I know that before my last ride, it was below 60%. And what's the point of the wheel icon? Another instance of fixing something that didn't need to be fixed. If you were going to mess around with it, it should have been changed to percentage increments of 5% as opposed to the set 10%.

  • The only saving grace for me is that they haven't changed it on my Forerunner 920XT. So at least I can see it there.

  • I am very disappointed in versions 8.xx & 9.xx, neither of which have any improvements / fixes of substance and both have serious retrograde changes / bugs. My pet dislike is the direction arrows which are totally pointless for me and seriously degrade the clarity and usefulness of the map and worse if you disable "Turn Guidance" (see left & right screens) the arrows become 40% bigger !, I reported this to "support" and all they could say is "that's very odd"? . Please Garmin provide a switch to enable / disable the arrows so everyone has choice to enjoy them or not. I tried both 8.xx & 9.xx (and all the betas) but each time have retreated to 7.10

I reckon it is Garmin who has gone "off course"

  • My DI2 battery lasts months between charges, I recharge when it gets to 40%.  Does the Garmin put up a warning when it gets really low like for other sensors?

Yes, it gives a warning that you have to actively dismiss that you have 20% left . (assuming you have the wireless di2 unit connected with your head unit).

At 5% left, di2 shuts down front shifting, and leaves you with just rear shifting. (this is the di2 system doing it, whether you have a Garmin connected or not.)

Charging at 40% is perhaps a little conservative, but hey, that's a better approach than charging too late.

And while I appreciate there are enough batteries on bikes now that an icon may be required to differentiate between them, like most on this thread, I agree that the loss of granularity of info from a percentage display to bars is a backwards step.

  • I'm glad you responded. When I bought my DI2 power train, I was told the software shut down front shifting at 20%. I thought it odd that Shimano would leave that much power left before shutting that aspect of shifting down. Glad to know I have an additional 15% of power left before that function kicks in. Thanks for the info!

  • Fixed with new Beta release - now back to the way it was thankfully!

  • Thanks for alerting me to the new beta.

Looks like as well as restoring the percentage figures, they have actually improved it by differentiating between low and critical battery alerts.
