No route recorded, but total distance is correct

I use my Garmin 530 for my daily commute to work. When I arrive at work I always pause the ride and turn the device off (sleep mode). For my way back home I turn the device on and hit the start button again. This always works fine until yesterday. The ride in the morning was recorded but the way back home was not recorded as a route on the map. Strangely the distance is correct. It's 19 km one way, and in Garmin Connect it shows 38 km total, but only the morning ride is showed on the map. I checked the map on the device itself and shows the same (half) route.

I ride with a combined speed/cadence sensor connected to the Garmin (ANT+). The GPS is turned on in the chosen activity profile (just checked). For the ride back home the battery had about 20% left in it. When I arrived home it was at 17%.

I appreciate any suggestions...

  • It sounds like an indoor profile was used, or the GPS signal was just lost. Do you see speed/cadence values being recorded during the second half of the ride? If you are comfortable with it, posting a public link to this ride here may offer some more insight.

  • Thanks for your reply. I'm 100% sure no indoor profile was used. I use a profile with the option GPS+Glonass turned on. On the second half of the ride I saw my speed and cadence as normal while cycling, so I was not aware something was wrong (I don't ride in navigation mode when commuting). When I uploaded the ride I noticed that the second half was missing. Still the total distance, average speed etc. are correct.

Lost GPS signal could be, but that would mean it was lost for more than 40 minutes. I thought it could be the low battery (under 20%), but I can't find any information about this.

  • I was asking if you see graphs in Garmin Connect with speed and cadence data after you upload it. Again, if you're comfortable sharing a link to the ride that may help.

There is no setting that would cause the track to not be recorded because of low battery, so I'm unsure of what has happened without the ride/.fit file.

  • Yesterday I did a 60k ride , didn't really check the GPS was connected at the start as it has always been ok in the past but after the ride I noticed the first 1.5k was missing from the route but the distance & elevation profile was ok for the full ride, my assumption was that the GPS didn't connect till the 1.5k mark but the recording still used speed & elevation. So likely your GPS didn't connect / re-connect for the homeward journey but the other stats recorded as normal, if the speed & cadence is shown on the unit you would not think there was a GPS issue. My previous 520 would have whinged if I started without a GPS fix but the 530 does not seem to tell you

  • , if you don't mind zipping the associated .fit file and attaching it to your thread, we could take a deep dive into the data and see what exactly happened.

    • From the \GARMIN\ACTIVITY folder on your Edge...
      • Zip the file, then in a reply post Insert >> Image/video/file >> click Upload >> browse for file >> OK.
      • Or upload the fit file to a file sharing service, such as OneDriveGoogle DriveDropbox, etc., make the file public, then paste a link to the file in your post.
  • It took me some time. I'm a Garmin novice so hope this is correct.

  • The return route has GPS data, however, it's all the same GPS coordinate, so no movement based on GPS. I can see the ~8.5 hour gap  where the device was put into sleep mode.

When the ride starts up again, the coordinates do not change, but you are getting distance values from the speed/cadence sensor, as mentioned by @L.Rouge and as seen in the last timestamp (values are my local time UTC-4 and statute distance).

Using Garmin Basecamp and Fit File Repair Tool I was able  to take your gpx track from the "out" session, invert it then add it to the entire activity. This creates a "fake" total out-and-back GPX track. Of course, this is assuming the return session was identical to the out session, just reversed.

As for how to prevent this in the future, make sure you have solid GPS signal and as you're moving check your edge to verify that it is recording a moving GPS signal. I know a lot of Garmin users use their commute to and from work as a single activity, but I also see a lot of issues posted here when there is such a large time gap. Maybe consider this as 2 separate activities. Also, might be good to do some maintenance on the device.

    • After verifying that everything has synced, remove the files in the \GARMIN\ACTIVITY folder on the device’s file system using these directions: Removing Recorded Activities on a Garmin Fitness Device
    • Avoid excessive button presses such as pausing during your activity. If you need to pause frequently during your ride, consider turning on auto pause
    • Regularly check for firmware updates using Garmin Express

  • Thanks very much Seilogramp for the research an useful tips. The starts and stops during the ride are all with auto pause on. I always use auto pause. Under 5 km/h it pauses the ride. All the starts and stops you see are traffic lights close to my work. I use the button only twice, when I leave home and when I arrive at work. And on the return way twice again of course.

I agree that it would be better to make two rides of the daily commute but I also use Strava and I try to minimize these rides to prevent a very large number of rides. On future rides I will check on the navigation page if the route is really recording and if the ride is plotted on the map.

  • I have a question about the update. You did mention doing a firmware update using Garmin Express. Is this different from a software version update with Garmin Connect? My current version is 8.20.

Those tips were a cut/paste from my saved notes for a corrupt fit file. Your activity was not corrupt.

    firmware update using Garmin Express

Not normally a difference, just a little less problematic when using Garmin Express, IMO.
