Custom cues

I generally create routes in Ride With GPS, and these routes have both custom cues and POIs.  I've been auto-syncing between RWGPS and the Garmin.  While riding with a friend the other day who was using the RWGPS app on her phone for navigation I realized I was getting very different cues than she was, and no custom cues.  And of course no POIs shown on my map, but I expected that.

Is there ANY way to get the Garmin to use the cues AS IS from RWGPS?  If not, I really don't know why I bought this device, as it's nearly worthless to me if I can't use navigation.

  • You can create some extra turn sound alerts with appbuilder5+.

Does somebody know how to turn of the black course point alert/pop-up? On my forerunner 945 I can turn them off by turning off "turn guidance".

  • It is a course by course option

    Menu>Navigation>Courses>[Select the Course]>Settings>Course Points>Enable/Disable

Removes the Pop-up and the little symbols & point name on the Map

Or of course you delete the generated course points in the route planner before you export to FIT or TCX or you export as GPX

  • No I only want to switch off the pop ups and use the datafield "CRS PT Dist". So I need the course points.

I don't know what will happen when I disable coursepoints in the course. Will the datafield "CRS PT Dist" be populated? I think I need to test this.

No. That's from a course point (which you've disabled.)

    ====================

I'd suggest trying "turn guidance" and turning recalculation off.

The "turn guidance" notifications are much more obvious than those for course points.

You can use both at the same time (as long as you realize they are separate).

The battery usage should be OK with "turn guidance".

  • Ok, when "turn guidance" is turned on, will the coursepoints in the fit/tcx file be used for the guidance? Or will the edge530 calculate a new guidance?

  • If turn guidance is on the unit generates the navigation prompts.  Course points are never used for generating turn prompts.  All they are is a location where some custom text pops up.  That text can be used for anything including navigation prompts.

  • That's my problem, I like to make my own navigation promps and I don't like the default black coursepoint pop ups alert. That's why I like to turn them off and only use the datafield "CRS PT Dist" and a datafield made wirh appbuilder5+ for sound alerts.

But my conclussion is that it's not possible to only use the datafield "CRS PT Dist" without the default pop up alert, who jumps in front of the datafield when you reaching a coursepoint.

I think Garmin is missing something at this point.

  • It's old behavior (it's worked this way since the 500/800, at least). It's very unlikely that Garmin will change how it works.

  • On the forerunner 945 it's possible to turn them off. All alerts can be turned off except this one :-)

  • They had it once briefly, on the 520 (not plus) at FW 12.10 (version 13.20 was the last!) they surprised everyone by introducing enhanced use of TCX Course Points, "Updated navigation instructions to use course points if they are available.".

With "Turn Guidance" disabled the 520 would display the next point name, distance to point and direction symbol in the top of map "Guide Text", the distance would count down accurately and if you were on a non-map page the bottom of screen alert would start about 80m from point and count down. Was brilliant so of course it didn't get transferred to the 520+ or anything else. My 520 finally died and I had to get a 530 and was disappointed.
