Garmin Segments and Navigation with Komoot route - Updated 2022 (v9.40)

The (excellent !) ClimbPro guide says : "If you are using Garmin segments, then the course must be created in Garmin Connect and transferred to the Edge using Garmin Express or Garmin Connect Mobile. T"

I knew that was the case with Strava but somehow hoped that with Garmin segments transferred manually it wouldn't be needed to create a route in GC to have segments and it would also work with a Komoot route. So what would be the best way to for a Komoot generated route to have Garmin Segment working ? Importing the Komoot GPX in GC first or does the Komoot background synching (so not the CIQ widget) take care of the problem ? Thanks !

PS - it's too bad there's no simulator on the 530 like there was on the Nuvis to troubleshoot ahead of a ride ;-)

2022 Update : see details on page 2, Komoot routes are no longer compatible with segments for me

  • Segments and navigation have never been 100% reliable for me. But things sometimes work if you use the following route:

    - get your segments all set up in Garmin Connect

    - connect komoot and Garmin so that routes from komoot are automatically transferred to Garmin, i.e. don't use the komoot CIQ app, but let the backends figure things out

    - fiddle with an existing komoot route (change a waypoint a little bit) or create a new komoot route

    - this route should automatically transfer to Garmin and the segments should be embedded - cross your fingers

I think for Strava segments the embedded segments can be checked in Garmin Connect Web but I don't think this is possible for Garmin Segments (it should be IMO).

  • Thanks for the reply and suggestions.
I've had a chance to experiment since and found that Garmin Segments need to be transferred via connect.garmin.com or GCMobile to get triggered on the road. It doesn't matter whether the Komoot route has been synced automatically or via the CIQ App as far as I can tell.

Once I'd established that I deleted my test segment from the 530 and re-transferred the route (created from an imported GPX to hopefully force the inclusion of segments) from GCM and it didn't get triggered.

So it seems that if you can see the segment under Training/Segments then you're good to go however which way the route is created/transferred to the 530. If anyone finds that not to work for them, please post !

  • if you star a Strava segments on strava, Garmin connect  receives that notification and creates the segment fit file and transfers into the new files folder on the e530 and on starting the segment is transferred into the segment folder and added to segment list fit file, this is same process for strava routes also.

Routes and segments are one of the same that if you started a route you will not see any segments until you finish the route.

I build route files, they are basically a series of waypoints, there are about 10 different messages that can be added to them like "left" "right" "straight" "water", "food", etc.

unless there has been a change to the XML definitions, segment information is not stored in a route.

one difference is if you go off route(null gps data like going through a tunnel) on routes your e530 will try to get back onto your route where as a segment it is cancelled.

"strava live segments" is not live, live refers to approaching a popular segment and its download from your paired phone, once you have saved your activity and uploaded thats when segment effort is registered.

  • ok but this topic was specifically about "Garmin Segments". Based on previous feedback it seems that for "Strava Segments" to work while navigating the route must have been created specifically in Strava, for "Garmin Segments" the route can be created anywhere.

  • On a related topic, am I doing something wrong or is the "live" feature, i.e. being ahead/behind your PR, is not available for Garmin segments but only for Strava segments ? When I'm in a Garmin segment while riding it shows my PR in the top part and a chart below and Distance to Go and Time to Go but not Ahead or Behind. Thanks !

  • I use Garmin segments on a 1030 and the time ahead/behind is always displayed.

  • Thanks, are you using the 2 field Segment Datascreen maybe ? I was using the 4 field version and noticed that per the manual with the 2 field version the top part showed the info of the SL and Connection/Self. I've switched and will see how it goes tomorrow !

  • So I switched to the 2 field option but it shows a map, not the ahead/behind like in the manual, unless there's a setting I can't see. Chosing the "Time Ahead" field does the trick, with the 4 field option too.

  • ok so everything had been workig fine with segments popping up in due time when following a route until I got fed up by the annoying  "recalculation" prompts that don't go away automatically and turned off "recalculation". Apparently that prevents the segments from appearing. Since Garmin treats segments as a new temporary route I suppose it implies a recalculation...
