Garmin Segments and Navigation with Komoot route - Updated 2022 (v9.40)

The (excellent !) ClimbPro guide says : "If you are using Garmin segments, then the course must be created in Garmin Connect and transferred to the Edge using Garmin Express or Garmin Connect Mobile. T"

I knew that was the case with Strava but somehow hoped that with Garmin segments transferred manually it wouldn't be needed to create a route in GC to have segments and it would also work with a Komoot route. So what would be the best way to for a Komoot generated route to have Garmin Segment working ? Importing the Komoot GPX in GC first or does the Komoot background synching (so not the CIQ widget) take care of the problem ? Thanks !

PS - it's too bad there's no simulator on the 530 like there was on the Nuvis to troubleshoot ahead of a ride ;-)

2022 Update : see details on page 2, Komoot routes are no longer compatible with segments for me

  • So fast gorward a year and...I have a problem with Garmin segments! Has a firmware update messed things up maybe?

I started a Komoot route after making sure the desired segment was available under "Training" and...nothing happened.

So I selected the segment manually, chose Ride and there it was but was not getting updated, just static info.

I had checked that Recalculation was activated (I'd noticed that was a problem last year if it was off).

Now all was not lost because my FR955 (no route loaded) did start the segment, unfortunately the info was skeletal, Distance to Go, Time and Time ahead/behind.

So am I doing something wrong on my 530 or does the route need to be created with GC now? Still that wouldn't explain why a segment manually selected would not update in real time.

    Thanks!

  • Segments from komoot routes work pretty reliable for me on the 530 since the last FW update. However, the route needs to go from komoot to Garmin with Course Sync, i.e. not being uploaded to the Edge using komoot's CIQ app.

  • Lucky you ! I wouldn't have gotten badly annoyed on some challenging climbs and then spent an hour testing several scenarios tonight ! I'll post that as an answer to the original message. I checked and I have the latest 9.40.

  • So after an hour testing several scenarios tonight ! Here is what I found, same on the FR955 and the Edge 530 :

    - segments get detected no problem when there is no route provided they've been sent to the device ahead of time (just check they're in the list)

    - Komoot routes are not compatible with segments, regardless of whether they've been synced or transfered via the CIQ App

    - Segments can be activated manually if their starting point hasn't been reached yet.

    - Segments get activated perfectly with a route created on Garmin Connect

    - Navigation recalculation can be "prompted", doesn't have to be automatic
