New Edge 530 Version 7.00 inaccurate and unresponsive elevation/grade readings

I'm on my second Edge 530 after a warrantee claim on the first.

Unit has been going fine until I recently updated the software to 7.0. Now I don't get any accuracy on total elevation, and the grade is totally screwed during the ride.. Showing a negative gradient on a 2 km steep climb,,,

HELP!!!!!!!!!!

  • hmm...mine seemed OK - in fact on a return trip i chose to have the gradient available on a gravel ride - so that i can tell why i'm struggling +1 to +3 degrees is significant when it's been a long day.

  • Hello, my Edge seems to have a pretty consistent grade and total ascent readings, I use speed sensor, but I found out that elevation displayed on trip computer is often different to one that's recorded on .fit file, it's easy to see if you compare it to elevation of start or end point on elevation graph on GC of your activity.

  • Read this thread. It goes back to FW 3.50.0.0

This is a known issue, even Garmin acknowledged it (see the pinned reply from Garmin-Matthew). I was involved in the beta FW testing for the software fix attempt. It did not work, and is probably a hardware issue. In case this happens to you I would suggest contacting Garmin Support and asking for a replacement. I got mine replaced and the issue was gone.

those two holes are for the beeper. The barometric measurement happens somewhere around the charging port, as described by aweatherall in the thread above.

  • Oh I didn't know it was a known issue,  thank you for the suggestion, I'll try to contact Garmin support.

  • After 18 days waiting, GARMIN has responded. The only answer now is, that according to the information I give them, I have to send my device to their facilities.
Just this, not a single word about whether the bugs are common or not, whether they are fixing it or not.
They also don't tell me if they are going to try to repair the device or send me a new one.
What would you do in my place?
Would you require a garmin commitment to pay me back? since from what is read in the forum, are general failures, with which the new one that they send me will be just as bad. or even worse, send me one repaired with the same faults and on top of that it would no longer be new and with a shortened warranty.

  • It depends on how important the grade and total elevation is to you.  I have no interest in those functions so I would keep the unit as presumably everything else works just fine.

Be aware though that total elevation climbed during a ride will likely not be completely accurate from any consumer device.  There are so many variables affecting it.  Also, unless you have commissioned an accurate survey of the route you don't really know what the true figure should be.

As elevation is difficult to measure accurately this will have knock on affects to grade measurement as that altitude info to be calculated.  Is having an accurate grade reading really that useful or just nice to have?  Personally I don't really need to know how steep a hill is.  If I am interested I could work it out afterwards.

  • I respect your decision to comply with what you consider acceptable, THIS FACT does not give GARMIN the power to sell me a very expensive device with joke and lie functions and force me to accept them. The argument that it is difficult to calculate and blah blah blah doesn't work for me because older models like the 1030/820/520 work fine. But it is not about what everyone considers important or not. The point is that GARMIN sells a device with "x" number of functions and scams you because they don't really work. Garmin should notice big on the box which functionalities really work and which ones are a joke. Then each client will decide for himself if it is worth buying or not

  • How accurate were the earlier models?  How do you know they were generally better on elevation measurement?

  • All the problems come with new Sony GPS chipset, now devices 530/830/1030 plus has got more battery but bad very bad accuarate in location, elevation, gradient, temperatureturn to turn navigation... Read here :
