New Edge 530 Version 7.00 inaccurate and unresponsive elevation/grade readings

I'm on my second Edge 530 after a warrantee claim on the first.

Unit has been going fine until I recently updated the software to 7.0. Now I don't get any accuracy on total elevation, and the grade is totally screwed during the ride.. Showing a negative gradient on a 2 km steep climb,,,

HELP!!!!!!!!!!

  • mine did exactly the same thing today. overall ride read 1164VM and in relaty it was 2649VM according to both strava and ride with GPS. did you get any answers from Garmin?

  • No I haven't as yet.. And the problem is persistent.. I've tested on all GPS settings, and have reset the device..

  • I'm on my 3rd 530 for the same reason.  Garmin now says it's a hardware issue

  • Did they get you to set elevation before each ride and then send thru sample ride data before replacing. Im

on my 2nd unit.. I should have kept my edge 500

  • Oh yes!  Went thru those charades for quite awhile with predictable results

They then sent it higher in the chain-of-command.  Dinked around there for a bit before recently concluding it not a software issue but rather a hardware issue.  Replacement units being backordered according  to help line.

  • Seems I have a rather annoying time ahead of me.. I should have bought a wahoo

  • I wouldn't go that far!  ;-)  Give Garmin a chance. Other than the elevation thing, I love my 530...and I've had plenty of Edge devices!

  • I had a similar problem with my Forerunner 645m.  I also thought it was due to a software update but that turned out just to be a coincidence.  It was actually a faulty barometric sensor. Returned the device and all was sorted. Apparently, it's quite easy for the delicate sensor to be blocked up by gunk, especially in the wet. Before returning you might also check the two small holes above the serial number on the back of the device and clean with fresh water or very gently with something like an old, soft toothbrush.

  • Ohhh gosh. Am I joining this party? I hike-a-biked up about a hundred meters today and my Garmin total ascent didn't move a meter. It then started going up as I was riding flat/downhill. It also said I was at 12m when I was about 200m elevation. I found a geodetic station at 4m elevation and reset the elevation only for it to tell me I was at -5m elevation shortly after whilst still about 4m above the sea level! Post-ride the Edge 530 had me at 880m climbed, Strava at 1040m and Garmin Connect corrected at 1351m. Knowing my local loop well, the Strava data appears more in line with what I'd expect to see. Any suggestions?

  • Ignore the total ascent numbers?
