Can you load a new course in 530/830 without stopping the current activity recording?

Very often i am realising that a course is not as nice as it looked on the planner and I will take out Komoot and quickly edit it and sync it back to garmin connect. I want to be able to load the new course without stopping the activity. Is it possible?

In my very old Edge 800 this was standard (well, except that you needed a USB cable to send the route). I also have a Forerunner 735XT that can't do that (or I haven't found how to do it yet) and it is frustrating.

Thanks

  • Yes. The course/route and the activity are 2 separated things that can be paused and stopped independently. I tried it the other day - stopping a course and loading a new one didn't interrupt the activity, which you could obviously pause while selecting a new course.

  • That's very good. Thank you.

  • Quick update to my previous reply: I just learned that you can only load a new route during an activity if it's already on your device. Apparently there's no way to transfer new routes to the device during an activity, which, quite frankly, seems like an astonishing lack of a crucial feature to me.

So, while my previous reply is still ture, there's a major limitation: The new route has to be on the device or you need to have it calculated on device by picking a point on the map (which is fine for short detours, but will likely be a very subpar result compared to a longer, carefully planned Komoot or Strava route).

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply. I have had the same answer as your original from three independent sources. i have tried this on a test ride now and I haven't had any lack, which probably means you are right. I have started a topic here: https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-530/230901/how-to-make-edge-530-sync-courses-from-the-phone-app-over-bluetooth

Every video and document I read did not mention this. It is a feature I use on most of my rides (I like to explore). Technically it sounds very silly as even data fields I am using are accessing the internet via bluetooth and get updates in the middle of the activities. I will try a few experiments and try the komoot and strava IQ apps.

  • It's my understanding that using IQ apps during an activity isn't possible either. I agree that it's a strange limitation. If you aren't set on the device yet, you might want to know that Wahoo handles this flawlessly - there you can effortlessly send a new route to the unit during (!) an activity. In that light the Wahoo Elemnt Roam might be an option for you.
