530 does not flash "Go" at start of Garmin segment, but device records the segment time anyway!

I have 4 Garmin segments setup. On today's ride I saw "Go" at the start of only 1 of the 4 segments. During the ride I assumed that the other 3 segments did not trigger.

But, when I got home I uploaded the ride to Garmin Connect, and all 4 segment times were displayed!

Any thoughts to what's going on?

  • Interesting - I wonder whether I have to go through a whole factory reset and new setup to get things working. Anybody out there tried riding a course with multiple segments and getting guidance after completing the first segment?

  • I have no course(s) loaded on my Garmin and segments pop up and record as expected.\

  • Thanks for the reply. You are talking about Garmin (not Strava) segments, right?

Do you need to enable segments on the 530 before every ride, or once enabled they stay enabled on the 530?

    thanks again!

  • In a sense it is the other way around: It is not straightforward to get Live Segments while navigating a course. If you just ride around it should be pretty easy.

This appears to be related to Garmin's implementation which only allows for a single FIT/TCX/GPX used for navigation, so segments  have to be embedded as course points into the used FIT/TCX/GPX.

With Wahoo things are a bit easier: If you happen to run over the start of a segment it'll trigger the segment - no matter whether you are actually moving into the direction of the segment. It is a bit simpler but works flawlessly.

  • The issue being described does not appear to be related so much to courses, but rather that the segment that are loaded on the unit are disabled rather than being enabled.

  • Strange. I enabled all 4 segments on the 530. then went for another ride passing through all 4 segments. I'm sure they were all enabled. Only 2 of the 4 segments fired off this time. More thoughts on what to check? thx

  • Are the segments public? If so send me the URL to them and your activity file and will see if the match. Maybe the unit did not think you passed through the starting point.

  • Very sorry. Just checked my segment maps (again), and when I messed with them yesterday I accidentally deleted 2 of my 4 segments. But the 2 segments that remained fired as they should. I'm still learning how to use this thing :-)

What is curious is that I have read other forum threads on this site where people keep saying that a segment needs to be embedded in a 'course'. I have no courses, so I know that is not true now. I guess we're all learning. Sorry about wasting your time.

  • No problem.

The only time that a segment needs to be referenced in a course file is if you want that segment to execute when following that course.

If you are not following a course then the Edge will look for a match between all your enabled segments on the unit and your current position.
