530 does not flash "Go" at start of Garmin segment, but device records the segment time anyway!

I have 4 Garmin segments setup. On today's ride I saw "Go" at the start of only 1 of the 4 segments. During the ride I assumed that the other 3 segments did not trigger.

But, when I got home I uploaded the ride to Garmin Connect, and all 4 segment times were displayed!

Any thoughts to what's going on?

  • I now see that others on this 530 forum have similar issues with segments. I'm new to this forum (and Garmin).

Does anyone from Garmin tech support view and answer any of the questions and issues discussed in this forum?

Or is it "the blind leading the blind"?

  • Garmin does occasionally respond when there are system-wide issues or to announce product updates. For the most part this is a user-to-user forum. Not necessarily "blind leading the blind," because there are some very knowledgeable members on here.

  • If you post the FIT activity file I can see if the segments executed on the unit.

When you upload the activity to Garmin Connect it processes the GPS position data against your segments to look for matched and that is what you see in Garmin Connect. Not what was matched on the unit.

For example I could disable all my segments on my unit so that none execute during the ride, but Garmin Connect would still match them when I uploaded the activity.

  • I see my problem. Only one of my 4 segments was on the 530. The other 3 were on GConnect, but not sent over the 530.

So I sent the other 3 segments from GConnect to the 530, then enabled them all. I now see all of the 4 on the 530.

Thanks for making me think more about it! :-)

This is my 1st time using a Garmin computer. I'm impressed with all the wonderful features in it, but underwhelmed by the software. I was expecting more in the line of 'plug and play', or at least a tighter connection between GConnect and the 530. Looks like a lot of "try this and try that" is what I'm in for....

  • Thanks for letting me know you have this one figured out. Good luck.

  • Have you tested your setup now that all segments are on your Edge? For me and Strava segments, I have to manually stop a segment after I finish it and get the results pop-up screen by pressing the upper right burin and selecting Stop Segment.

Don't know whether this is expected behavior for Strava segments and whether the same thing happens with Garmin segments.

  • They should automatically stop

  • Thanks for asking.

5 days ago I went to the Garmin Connect Dashboard page and sent all 4 of my Garmin segments to my 530 using these buttons (red circle):

Then I sync'd GC (webpage version, not app) to the 530. Next, on the 530, I enabled all segments. That was 5 days ago.

Today I went for a ride, thinking that all 4 segments would fire. The 1st one did not. I stopped and again enabled all segments, and continued the ride. I did not re-ride the 1st segment (I should have, but I was getting tired!), but all remaining 3 segments did fire. I'm now wondering if every time I go for a ride I will need to re-enable all the segments? That seems crazy to me. I would expect that once I enable a segment on the 530 it should stay enabled for all future rides.

Am I misunderstanding how this all should work?

Can someone explain what these circle buttons do (highlighted in blue below)?:

I'm not impressed how well the GC webpage talks to the 530. Lots of buttons to push, many not obvious. For example in this case of creating segments on GC and sending them to the 530. It should be a much simpler process: 1) create segment on map, then 2) send to 530 via sync. All segments sent to the 530 should automatically 'enabled' by default, and should always stay enabled until the user disables them on the 530. Just my 2 cents....I'm still learning.

Overall I'm very impressed by the 530. The GC webpage, and the way the GC webpage communicates with the 530, not so much.

    thx

  • I'm reading other threads on Garmin segments where people say that a course has to be preset to use segments. Is this correct? I assumed that whenever I ride through a segment it triggers it and I did not think it needs to be part of a predefined 'course'. Is that my problem? I did not have a 'course' preset in my above issue....

    thanks again
