Indoor Workouts With Trainer Resistance Control

I do have a workout (30 x (1min @ 120% FTP, 30s rest) - yes my coach has sadistic tendencies) that I would love to run in resistance mode on my trainer. ERG mode is a bit slow to catch up for the 1min intervals so I adjust my power output using gears and cadence.

I tried creating a simple workout in Garmin Connect that simply triggers the laps as prescribed, however, each time a lap is triggered the Edge resets my previously chosen resistance to the default value which is the lowest available. Unless somebody has an idea how to prevent resetting the trainer resistance I am stuck at either pressing the lap button manually or recording the session on my Fenix 5+ which doesn't speak FE-C. I guess a third option would be to set the resistance and then disconnect the trainer - clumsy as well.

Any ideas on how to get lap triggers for prescribed interval times without messing with the trainer's resistance?

  • Hi All,

I have deactivated all Bluetooth devices near my Home-trainer (except my Edge 530 of course) 2 weeks ago and since then, no more ERG issue!!

  • Is Erg mode really the problem? I use it for Zwift workouts controlled by an Android device (not the Edge 530) and it responds very fast, like as soon as I hit the colored gate I can immediately feel the right resistance. Even intervals as short as 10 seconds seem to work well. Although my FTP is probably lower than yours.

  • Fair point. I can work with ERG mode if I change into the right grat. prior to the interval. However, the 120% FTP interval (roughly 380W) is just 60s, so even if lose just 5s due to the trainer adjusting (Zwift on MacBook Pro with ANT+ dongle) I have to compensate for this during the remaining 55s. Doable but using constant resistance would simply be much easier.

  • I have the same problem too, 1030 with Elite Arion Digital trainer. I'm trying to follow a HR based workout with resistance level fixed at 40% for the whole workout, to roughly emulate the speed and resistance I encounter when riding outdoors on a flat road. ERG mode has it's uses but I prefer for some workouts to have a consistent resistance and change wheel speed/cadence by using the gears on the bike.

One workaround is to use the phone app for your trainer to set the resistance first. But it shouldn't need to be like this - there should be native support from Garmin for this. I have raised it as an issue today and this is what they said...

I am afraid there is not a workaround at this time. I can look at getting this requested/ reported as a feature request but it does of course depend on demand, so other people may need to report they want this feature

So if you suggest it too, either through product support online or using email address product.support **at** garmin.com perhaps they will take notice and sort it. I don't believe that they really pay any attention to discussions about features through the forum.

  • The other flip side of altering it by watch (or, as I have tried, the trainer's own app) is if you are doing an intervals workout, it's almost bearable to press button on watch....scroll down...set resistance...OK.... IF the intervals are 10 mins long, BUT if you are doing a 1min at HR5 , 1 min at HR2 type set of intervals (As proposed by a training plan!), you've lost half the minute setting the trainer up!   (there is only so much power & resulting heart rate can be put into the trainer at 0% resistance, even in top gear at 10,000 rpm!!!! (Obviously exaggerated for illustrative effect.... but you get the idea...) As JImkartheruser sauys, it would be OK if it didn't reset at every step.

Thing that annoys me is when I set  a course, it gets the hills , no matter how small, or short,  perfectly. I pedal the trainer in the same gear I would for theat stretch in reality.... however when I want to just add "set resistance to 40%" into a workout step so that I have something to pedal against that kicks in at an appropriate moment in the workout,  it's impossible.

Garmin, Please listen to your users in a similar style to the way your devices listen to satellites!

In the meantime, Im' going to try that email....

  • My comment was marked as abusive probably due to language.

I would just like to reiterate that I think it's ridiculous that this is even an issue.

    Long time Garmin user.

  • Two years in and the issue has still not been fixed. I've just got my first Garmin ever and having previously used Bryton which had quite a lot of such annoying issues, I thought that I wouldn't need to bother with such nuisances with Garmin. My first training proved otherwise. :(

  • I wonder how many people garmin expect to come out and tell them this is a necessary and logical feature... It reminds me of the world leaders (who are supposed to have access to the latest tech and info and be specialists) needing kids to educate them on why global warming is bad.....
