Live Track on the Edge 530

I have the Edge 530 since a couple of months. Live Track is an important feature for me as I want my family to know where I'm cycling, especially when I'm alone. However, my experience is that the feature is far from stable. I hardly have a complete track. My impression is that it especially blows up if I cross an area without network coverage from the mobile phone. It obviously fails to continue live tracking when the network is available again. Does anybody have similar experiences? Is there a fix in some way? I love the Edge, however Live Track is really important and not getting it to run stable is really annoying. Thanks for any hints!

  • Mate, have a look around the forum, there are countless threads on people having issues with Live Track.

I’m running a 100% failure rate on it, if Garmin cannot at least guarantee some reasonable level of reliability and recovery from network drops, then they should remove the feature completely IMO.

I can’t even get out of the street without it dropping, which I think is when my phone transitions from my home wifi to 4g service and it just doesn’t connect again, or maybe an hour later which is useless and often disconnects again.

It’s a great feature, the auto start is excellent and works every time, but anything after that is a complete hit or miss joke, especially for something that is a “safety” feature.

As an alternative, you can try Find My Friends type apps in Apple, location sharing out of Google Maps or Messenger, Road ID app etc

  • I disabled LiveTrack after being inundated with "LiveTrack Auto Start Timed Out" messages every few minutes during a few of my rides.

  • I have the same issue, LiveTrack is terribly unreliable, it stops and sometimes restart, as it seems, randomly.

Garmin Edge 530 (with several SW versions) and Samsung Galaxy A3 2017.

  • During the last days, I found out the following to things:

    • Live Tack fails to start when I hit the start button while my iPhone is still connected with my WLAN. I have the impression, that it starts automatically  if you start the workout while not connected to WiFi
    • Live Track does not record and send track data once the mobile phone loses provider connection the first time, which can happen if you try to avoid main roads.

Altogether, this is very annoying and far behind my expectations.

  • Since I bagged Live Track, I thought I should also reply and say that my last ride was a 100% positive experience. It was only short, but it started automatically, didn't drop when leaving my street, didn't drop during the ride and finished correctly when I stopped the activity. It was only a short ride into the hills so I may not have lost mobile connection by then, but it worked AS IT SHOULD.

Two things that I know of have changed since my last ride with Live Track (I tore my calf 3 weeks ago so havent been on the bike).

    1. Garmin Connect Mobile has updated at least once, possibly more since my last ride (this may have contributed to the better performance)
    2. I connected the 530 to my Home WiFi - previously only using BT connection. (unlikely to have helped, but was something I changed)

    Edge 530 = V4.10

    GCM = 4.24.1

  • See the attached picture for a typical example. Starting automatically and correctly, if you make sure the neither Edge 530 nor phone has WiFi when starting the workout. Summary of the ride is correct in the too line, however the graph only shows a straight line home from the point where the phone lost connection for the first time.

  • That’s pretty representative of all of my failures, lots of straight lines.

just went for another ride, same as yesterday but a bit further into the hills where mobile coverage starts to get patchy. Live Track was working nearly half way into it, but had failed by the time I got home. Unfortunately I didn’t have “extend live track” enabled so couldn’t see where it failed.

When home, the Live Track symbol was just flashing at the top of the display and the Phone connection Status was just “searching” which is a little strange as I never got a notification that the Edge had lost connection with my phone.

Turned BT off/on on the phone, live track re-established itself however I had already ended the activity by then, and live track subsequently ended too.

  • Exact same problem here. I've had 3 of these on the trot using firmware 4.21/4.25 and IOS 13.1.3 on iPhone 8. These are regular routes which have recorded perfectly many times until these updates.Needs addressing please as Livetrack is a safety feature for many. Thanks.

  • Another ride, another fail, didn’t even get out if the street again, rode up into the hills and Live Track only started working half way on the return leg home. Compare the Live Track trace with the Road ID trace for the same ride, on the same Galaxy S9 phone.

  • Same problem again for today's ride. Also finding Livetrack does not end cleanly now and the icon is still showing on the 530 next time its switched on. Its all rather a mess really.
