Live Track on the Edge 530

I have the Edge 530 since a couple of months. Live Track is an important feature for me as I want my family to know where I'm cycling, especially when I'm alone. However, my experience is that the feature is far from stable. I hardly have a complete track. My impression is that it especially blows up if I cross an area without network coverage from the mobile phone. It obviously fails to continue live tracking when the network is available again. Does anybody have similar experiences? Is there a fix in some way? I love the Edge, however Live Track is really important and not getting it to run stable is really annoying. Thanks for any hints!

  • I had the Garmin 1000 unit before the power button fell off, I've been waiting for livetrack to work for 5 years.  A lot of the issue seems to be that garmin devices struggle to hold onto bluetooth connections. The ONLY garmin device I can guarantee to keep a bluetooth connection is my trusty old Forerunner 920XT, in fact it's difficult to stop it sometimes.

  • Here's another example of a failed LiveTrack.

Edge 530 SW 5.00, Samsaung Galaxy A3 2017, Connect App 4.24.2. WiFi on the phone was off. The Edge was connected to WiFi at the beginning of the ride. I started LiveTrack manually in the App, then started the ride by pressing the Edge start button. (By the way, it sometimes works this way. To me it seems to be random if it works or not.)

Is it so difficult to implement this function reliably? Does anyone know if Garmin is aware of the issue, and working on a solution?

  • Can we please fix Lightroom its still broken! Firmware 5.0 IOS 13.1.3 iPhone 8. Was working perfectly before updates.

IPhone 7 and 11 at iOS 13.2, App 4.24.1.4 and Edge 530. Livetrack never worked for me, when there won't be a fix soon, I will go back to Wahoo, there was never a problem.

  • My wife and I have had this issue too.  The only way we could fix it was to kill Connect on our phones (iPhone 6s and iPhone 8).  I've reported this on the Edge 530 Support Center, has anyone else?  I don't know if Garmin actually read these forums????  I encourage you to submit bug reports via the Support Center link.

  • Hey everyone,

just wanted to add my experience with LiveTrack. I own a couple of wearables next to the E 530, where the LiveTrack works in general. However, I have figured out, that for the E 530 to work with LiveTrack, I have to open up Garmin Connect, go into the Live Track menu, and make sure that there the correct device is selected (i.e. not a watch). For some weird reason, the Live Track option seems to always try to connect to the last device LT was used on, and not the actual connected device. Since I pay attention to this detail, all of my LT sessions were successful, even when the phone lost network coverage for a while (crossing a border and switching between home network and roaming), live track continued when the network was back.

    E530 Version 5.00, LG G6 Android 9.

  • Last couple of rides in the hills, that would normally have been a problem, have worked 100%.

Not sure exactly what may have changed, I’m sure GCM has updated in that time, however have also had an Android 9 update on my S9 too.

Whatever it was, my phone and Edge 530 are connecting without having to open the GCM app and staying connected, Live Track is hanging on and not dropping out, happy days.

  • Today, LiveTrack again did not work. No idea what is the reason. I switch WiFi off on my Galaxy A3 2017, started LiveTrack manually in the Connect app, started the ride on the Edge, and loaded a course on the Edge. Now see the LiveTrack result in the screenshot (start and end was covered manually)... only the first and the final 100 meteres were tracked...

  • I've noticed the same thing.  Since the 4.25 update (Android) everything has started working perfectly with my 530.  Up until now the 530 would not connect with the phone unless I manually started GCM on the phone and let it sit for 20 seconds or so.  Then livetrack would start but it would occasionally just stop. Especially if the phone loses cell coverage as it does often in the Colorado mountains.  Over the past week or so, the 530 started connecting without me touching the phone and livetrack has been stable.

Noticing this, for the last few rides I did a test where I did not touch GCM on the phone at all the morning before a ride.  I had not started it so it was way in the background.  Fired up the 530 and it connected to the phone.  LIvetrack worked fine.

I've disabled automatic update for GCM on my phone.  If 4.25 is going to be stable, Garmin is not going to get an opportunity to replace it with a broken version.
