Navigating Features vs. Rides?

I am considering a Edge 530 because I really don´t want the touch screen of the 830. However, I am interested in the navigation capabilities of the 530, so I am asking here as it will not be easy to get a unit to play with a few days so easily... Slight smile

So, here is what I am looking for:

  • As far as I know, activity tracking and navigation run separately, so I can stop navigation and restart it as many times as I want without messing with the recorded activity data. Is that correct?
  • I am looking for a way to change navigation during an activity. Let´s say I am planning a long tour after work, but something happens and I have to stay at work for one more hour. I will not have the time to adjust my route at the pc. If I was planning a route liek A->B->C->D->E being C a waypont quite far away with a much shorter B->D route, I would just like to be able to tell the navi to skip some waypoints in the current plan and send me to the next Waypoint. Is that possible with the 530?
  • I assume I can stop the navi and then manually ask to navigate to other points. However, as I cannot enter an address, can I at least look for a waypoint on the phone (Google Maps?) and send it easily to the Edge so it can navigate to it?

Regards

  • They should work the same (except one has a touch screen). (I find the touch screens work fine.)

    As for using Google...

You can install apps on the newer Garmins (starting with the 520).

There are two types of apps: "apps" and "widgets".  You can use "widgets" while recording a ride.

There's an "app" called "sendpoints" that lets you search for a location on a website (sendpoints.us) and produces a 4 number that you enter into the app.

There isn't a widget version of "sendpoints" but the "GRouteLoader" widget lets you use the sendpoints number.

  • Yep, I am not worried about the touch screen working, however I ride alot in cold/rainy weather, and I would preffer a solution where I do not have to mess with gloves/water on the display. Wink

About sending the points, is there no way to send them via BT? At the End my phone is always with me, I find it OK to use it where the GPS has it's limitations (touchscreen), but having to manually enter a code feels quite old school...

Maybe IQ Map Receiver (Waypoints and Tracks) could do it also, but I was kind of expecting such features out of the box.

  • Nothing out of the box. That's why people wrote apps.

IQ map receiver would also work (if you use Android).

"About sending the points, is there no way to send them via BT?"

That's basically what you are doing in what I described. It's just a little less straight forward.

1- You use your phone to lookup an address and get a number.

2- You type that number into a widget on the Garmin.

    • Locking the screen because it’s raining or the screen is wet it could be a solution. But, again, this is a proof that Garmin is aware of the bad quality screen and give us stupid solutions that are unacceptable for the product price.
  • Yeah, absolutely this is Garmin's fault. I mean look at all the other manufacturers at there who are successfully manufacturing sports tech touch screens that work reliably with rain and winter gloves. Like .... um, eh.
