“Sync failed - Device Connection Error”

I cannot get my new Garmin 530 to upload rides to my iPhone. Forgetting devices on both the Garmin & iPhone and repairing doesn’t work.  At my wit’s end here—this is the second most basic thing that the Garmin does after recording the ride in the first place.  Someone please help so that I don’t have to wait until I’m back from the Intelligentsia Cup and at my computer to upload my rides!

  • I;m having the same fing problem.  It worked for two rides, when I first got the 530  Then after some fing auto  update it no longer works.  Get <moderated> it together Garmin!

  • Just started having this issue after my last two rides. Followed the instructions here https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-530/169740/device-seems-to-be-busy. Ridiculous that such basic functionality requires numerous work around. Unacceptable Garmin.

  • As far as a workaround, I've found that if it fails I just have to turn off the edge and force quit the app. Turn the edge back on and launch the app and they sync. The red exclamation mark of death is then usually gone it I'll get reliable syncing for a while, then the cycle repeats.

It seems like it uploads to the Garmin servers, through the phone, first - then pulls it down to the phone. With no signal (wifi or LTE) I've never had a sync work. The bigger problem is when we are syncing we are frequently on the edge of wifi and the phone may be switching back and forth during the sync. It doesn't seem to like that. I wish it would just pull the file over to the phone first, then worry about any post-processing or whatever separately.

One more thing. I have way better results without both BT and wifi enabled, and since a pretty good chunk of my rides end where I don't have wifi, I just stick to BT.

  • Is there an update on this issue? I’m really starting to lose my patience. This issue has been going on for me for a few weeks now, haven’t had this issue previously. I just removed and added the 530 back and still can’t sync. This is ridiculous Garmin, get it together. Completely silent on this issue is unacceptable.

  • I had the exact same problem, but everything worked after updating to version 4.10. First I needed to enable wi fi on the 530, then restart the device, and after a while it started to update. Then I force quit all aplications on my phone and restarted it. The next time I synced, everything worked.

  • This is ridiculous! GARMIN SEND US A LIFELINE HERE! Freaking problem has been going for weeks. I am about to sell this and my fenix 5 and forget about your useless products!

  • I have exactly the same issue with my Edge 510/530 + Garmin Connect on iPhone 8 (iOS 13.3).
However, I found a workaround for both Edge 510/530.

    1. I connected my Edge to Garmin Connect on iPhone 11 (my wife's iPhone 11). On iPhone 11, sync worked perfectly.
    2. Then reconnect the Edge to my iPhone 8 and there are no sync errors!

After reconnecting, there is no problem. As soon as I save my ride, it uploads successfully to Garmin Connect. I uploaded more than 5  times w/ both Edge 510/530,  all of which were 100% successful. Previously, they almost failed.

    Software Version:

    • Edge 530: 5.20
    • Edge 510: 6.10
    • iOS: 13.3
    • Garmin Connect Mobile: 4.25.2.1

    Hope this helps.

  • lol. so you are suggesting to get hold of or buy an iphone 11 to resolve the syncing issues?? Perfect solution, i'll go out and buy one now.Laughing

  • Really poor communication from Garmin here.

Here is what worked for me after wasting a day on it :-/

Installed Garmin Express and forced a "little update" related to time-zones, maybe related to daylight saving time?

(I was already on 5.10). After that my phone and Edge 530 finally starting synchronising.

  • Was having the connection issues myself then went to my phones bluetooth settigns and saw that there was two items in the search for the garmin 530.   I added both to my phone after failing to pair multiple times.   It just worked after this fact
