Map Issues

I have an Edge 530 running firmware 3.50. It is my first Garmin unit and I am having a hard time understanding how a few mapping features work.

1. I have the map orientation set to track up in both Mountain and Road profiles. The Edge 530 does not display my track going up but rather it is to the side which makes determining turns difficult as the turn could be up or down. This gets confusing at complicated intersections. I haven't used this in the Mountain profile so for me it is a problem in the Road profile.

2. When I use the Road profile following a Mountain bike ride the Edge will bring up a map view when I stop at a traffic light and tell me I am on the last mountain bike trail I was riding even if I am 30 miles away from that point. I can't figure this out as I have the trailforks map disabled in the Road profile.

3. Do I need to have only one map active in each profile? I have 4 different basemaps available in each profile. I think 3 are Garmin maps and 1 is Trailforks. What happens if more than 1 map is enabled in a profile?

4. The Garmin user manual is absolute garbage in helping the end user know what the various feature of the device actually do. It's fine for instructing how to change the settings but that doesn't help the user know how those settings will affect their experience.

I am finding the maps and related feature to be extremely frustrating on this device. Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

  • The basemap is a world-wide map that doesn't have much detail. There is only one of these installed on the unit.

I supposed you have 4 detailed map (not basemaps).

If you have more than one overlapping detailed (routable) maps, the units can get confused.

So, try having only one detailed (routable) map enabled.

Note that the different units basically work the same (for navigation).

Another thing - make sure u disable Lock On Road - it can produce unnecessary confusion and inaccuracy as to your exact location. It will prefer to display your location as to what the map dataset says as road - so if you're on a dirt track or cycling path - it'll show you not on the path but on the next nearest road.

  • Yeah, don't use "lock on road".

It only affects how the blue arrow (your location) is displayed but that's not useful when cycling.

  • OK. I will try to only have 1 map enabled per activity profile and I'll disable "lock on road." Hopefully that will fix my problem.

Actual definition from Garmin - Lock on Road

Locks the position icon, which represents your position on the map, onto the nearest road.

EVEN WHEN YOU'RE NOT ON THAT NEAREST ROAD !!! So disable Lock On Road.

How do I know if the map is routable or not?

  • Did you ever find a fix for this?
