Pause Workout - Feature Request

The inability to pause a workout without pausing the entire ride is a HUGE shortcoming of the Edge 530.  On a stationary trainer, sure, we can all follow a workout exactly as prescribed.  In the real world we have to deal with stop lights, varying terrain, wind, and other variables that necessitate the ability to be flexible.

Wahoo NAILED this with their Elemnt units with a pause, skip forward, or skip backward option right on the workout screen.  With the Garmin Edge 530 (and 830, I'm assuming) this renders the workout feature basically useless for me.

Would anyone else like to see this come to the Edge 530/830?

  • It is possible to redo a step, but I don't think it is possible to go further back.  To skip forward you can press the lap button.  So if you need to skip back more than 1 step, you can do that by restarting the whole workout and pressing the lap button a bunch of times.

I agree that this approach as a workaround is somewhere between sucko-barfo and unacceptable.

  • I didn't know about holding lap to skip forward... will try this one. Thanks for the tip!

  • There is a solution to this one, albeit not provided by garmin. Recently I bumped into trainerday.com which lets you create FTP based workouts and send them to your Garmin Edge.

It's beyond idiotic that Garmin isn't providing this functionality themselves, and until I found out about trainerday I couldn't use workouts, because having to redo workouts every time my FTP changes is just not going to happen.

  • Shure, there are third party solutions, like trainingpeaks are unpayed services like trainerday. However I feel confortable with garmin so far and I would love to create intervalls with respect to %FTP.

My guess why we won't see this feature:

    • Most people that do structure workouts follow a plan provided through trainingpeaks
    • Instead of improoving the garmin workout features, garmin invested in calender syncronisation/API for alikes of trainingpeaks, todaysplan and others

Still, I keep my fingers crossed that the developers implement %FTP intervalls for cycling workouts.

  • Guys, this thread is about pause workout and step back/forward. If you need another functionality like structured workouts please post a new thread - feature request. It is just for clarify.

IMO if you really want to monitor and track your progress, do structured workouts, there are better services on the market. Already mentioned about TreinerRoad or TrainingPeaks. Those services are professional and works flawlessy, integrates with Garmin's computers well. I know, they cost money of course but if you really think about training ... probably you have no choice ;)

The toys like VO2max, FTP calculator, time to rest ... Do we really need this? I don't have to say those things are not important. They are, but if somebody need to know that parameters, then should consider to go to the professional lab. Your FTP does't change every ride as well as VO2max.

IMO Garmin should to be focused on the functionality that currently presents on their bike computers. If you plan structured workouts you HAVE TO have possibility of pause, step back, step forward in case of stop lights, time to arrive to the point when interval starts and so on.

Even ANT+ sensors needs to be repaired. Power dropouts still exists since at least 2 monts now. HR dropouts via ANT+ also are unstable. Those are very basic problem that need to be resolved.

    my 5 cents

  • It is possible to set a target using a custom power zone with minimum and maximum watts. So you can calculate the %FTP yourself and enter that. But I agree it would be nice if that were automated.

  • This response deserves an upvote just for using the words "sucko-barfo". Grinning

It pains me to learn Garmin has not added the ability to pause, go back, or skip intervals in a workout. I was ready to upgrade my 520 to the 530, but now I’m sad to leave the garmin eco system in order to get these features. Wahoo Bolt here I come, hopefully you live up if not surpass Garmin.

  • I guess Garmin really doesn’t care. It’s been 10 months and still no solution. Terrible

  • I just posted the same question. It seems that Garmin is not paying attention to this relevant issue unfortunately so I will come back to my old Wahoo when performing workouts outside.
