Weather Alerts - Can't turn off

I have tried several times to turn off the weather alerts through the Garmin Connect iOS app by selecting the Edge 530 > "General" settings and moving the slider on "Weather Alerts" to the off position (or More > Garmin Devices > Edge 530 > General). After syncing everything appears to have worked but the slider always ends up back in the on position the next time I connect to the device. This seems to be the case for the "Weather" slider as well, the one which should turn off not only the alerts, but any weather info on the Edge device. Am I missing something here?

In general, the Edge 530 seems to work well enough but any time I need to launch the Garmin Connect app -> trouble. Syncing settings fails about 1 out 3 times (stuck sync, have to hard close app). Impressive ability to drain my phones battery when running (iPhone 6s, current iOS), I can watch the % tick of by the second, phone gets very hot (Ron Burgundy - I'm not even mad, that's amazing). Tried deleting and reinstalling the app, seemingly every combination of power cycling, deleting the device and re-establishing pairing. Nothing seems to work.

Lots of headaches just to try to stop the Edge from (loudly) warning me about several flood warnings in the area every time it gets near my phone.

  • That may work, but then the incident detection capability will be disabled as well. Not quite a long term solution.

Good point. I don't take my phone on rides so I wasn't thinking about that feature. I just hate every time I get walk in the door, my computer warns me about small water craft issues and I'm cautiously optimistic that I've fixed it for that case. It's ridiculous that Garmin isn't working to address this. I just came here tonight hoping to find a solution and then got a little creative.

    Angry This didn't work.

  • I am in the same boat as everyone else. Turning weather alerts doesn’t work on iOS app. Oh well.

I discovered that the setting won’t be changed while you’re holding the Garmin connect settings page open. E.g., go to Device settings, disable weather updates, and go back to home screen without navigating away from this page. Every time you go back to connect it will be stuck as disabled

here’s the thing, it doesn’t help. Even with the settings set to off, you will still get small craft advisories. Wahoo’s UI is not as attractive but my next computer is not going to be a garmin

  • Same problem here 830 iOS 14

  • For every 100 weather alerts on my device, roughly zero are actually useful out on the open road.  Rather than being a feature that is IMPOSSIBLE to turn off permanently (it reactivates almost as fast as I can disable it), this should be a feature that is disabled by default and enabled only by the 1% of users that find it helpful.  In fact, this feature is actually more dangerous than helpful.  Dismissing alerts on my device while in a group ride, a race or a hard training session is 10X more dangerous than actually running into a thunderstorm that I could see coming from miles away.  Fiddling with my Garmin at full speed is distracting...like texting while driving.

  • Hi mates.

    I have a Garmin Edge 830.

I emailed Garmin Support because this is very serious, especially if you use the navigation on trails... the random Weather Alerts can distract you and block you from seeing the map in key moments.

For reference, Garmin Support reference ID: 20813457K0.

I almost had an accident and was reluctant to use the Garmin again because I think it is NOT SAFE.

The support told me they are trying to FIX THIS ISSUE.

I included the link to the Edge 830 thread in my original email to prove more people need that fixed.

Perhaps if more people also complain about the same issue, they might prioritise it.

  • Hi,

Garmin doesn't seem to give a f*** about this problem. My next gps is definitely not going to be a Garmin.

  • I emailed Garmin Support,

    Maybe they're working on it…

    My Message:

I am not alone, and it appears it’s a years’ old problem.
