Edge 530 stopped collecting ANT+/BLE data in the middle of a ride

It happened during my 20-mile ride today after I made a brief stop. The device was never turned off during the brief stop. I only realized what was happening about 2 miles later when I noticed the power data was stuck at 50W and there was no change in my HR. A hard power off and on reset it and it then recognized all the paired devices. During the "freeze", it was still collecting GPS and temperature data. Only data from external devices connected via ANT+ and BLE were not collected.

  • I had the same issue with my 830 (see the thread in that forum). I had both a power meter and a heart rate strap (both ANT+) drop after a stop.

  • Did your 830 display any power/HR data while the sensors lost connectivity to the device? My Edge 530 actually was stuck displaying 50W for 3-second average and 99 BPM for HR. I had to press and hold the power button for quite a while before the device would reboot.

  • Yes, I had a similar stuck number for power and 103 bpm for heart rate for the majority of my ride (over three hours).

I had a similar experience with just a stages power meter. After 30 minutes, the power data got 'stuck'. Confirmed via the stages iphone app that it was still on and reporting data. I had to remove and repair on the 530 to get it working again.

edit: It was originally paired via BLE, switched it to ANT+ and it's been stable.

  • Well, it happened again. This is getting really annoying. These were all the ANT+/BLE devices connected when it "froze":

    • Garmin speed sensor (ANT+)
    • Quarq DFour91 power meter (BLE)
    • Wahoo TICKR X HRM (BLE)
    • Garmin Varia radar RTL510 (ANT+)

When this happened, choosing the option to power the Edge 530 just left it stuck at the powering off screen. I needed to press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds to actually power it off. When it came back up, it won't recognize the power meter so I did another power off attempt. Again, it stuck at the powering off screen, requiring me to press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to power it off. When it came back again, it recognized the power meter.

  • I am starting to think this issue has something to do with the use of BLE sensors, or may be the use of BLE sensors with ANT+ sensors. In both occasions when my Edge 530 stopped collecting data from external sensors, I was on a bike with two BLE sensors (Quarq DFour91 power meter and Wahoo TICKR X HRM). On my other bike, on which I have done at least 10 times more rides, it does not have any BLE sensors and I have not experienced this issue once.

  • Did you have any BLE sensor connected to your Edge 830 when it happened?

Does it make a difference weather or not your phone is connected?

  • I have experience the same issues.  I was able to toggle the sensors on and off to get them to respond.

  • I believe you are spot on.  I'm going to disable BT completely and see if my GPS, ANT+, and spontaneous reboots subside next week.
