Touchscreen stops responding below ~11°C after firmware 29.22

Issue
Since updating to 29.22, the touchscreen becomes unresponsive whenever the ambient temperature drops below about 11°C .

On the previous firmware 28.34 same issue (see ouchscreen stops responding below ~15°C after firmware 28.34)

What happens

Because I had the same Issue with firmware 28.34, I returned my Garmin 1050 and received a new device from Garmin with firmware 11.24 pre-installed.

I put the Garmin 1050 in the refrigerator for an hour. Without gloves, I could operate the display (e.g., swipe).

With gloves, the display didn't respond at all.

Then I installed firmware 29.22 and put the Garmin 1050 in the refrigerator again for an hour.

Without gloves, the display was usable. With gloves, I could occasionally operate the display (e.g., swipe). Then it would stop working again, and the display would become completely unresponsive. When I operate the Garmin 1050 without gloves, the display responds again. When I then put on my gloves, the display responds again for a while until it becomes completely unusable with gloves on.

At room temperature (20 degrees Celsius), the Garmin worked perfectly with gloves.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Use Edge 1050 on firmware 29.22   when ambient temp is < 11°C.

  2. Try to operate the touchscreen (e.g., start a ride or open Navigation).

  3. Observe that touches don’t register or are extremely delayed.

  4. Warm the device (e.g., inside a jacket) and the touchscreen works again.

Expected behavior
Touchscreen should function normally at these temperatures, as it did on the previous firmware.

Actual behavior
Touchscreen becomes effectively unusable until the device is warmed up.

Request
Please investigate and fix this regression. It’s autumn and temperatures are dropping, which makes the device very hard to use outdoors.

  • Se fosse così per me non ci sarebbero problemi visto che le temperature dove abito io non scendono mai sotto i 15 gradi

  • I bought my 1050 last december, coming from a 1030+, and read this topic. Mine is running 29.22 and I put it in a freezer couple of times till -11 Celsius. The screen responds normally when very cold, so couldn't point this to a hardware issue?

  • Garmin exchanged my 1050, and tonight was the first time I've ridden in "cold" conditions (~55F / ~12C) and no problems. Previously I noticed the issue at around 45F / 7C, so it's not in the clear yet. It was quite unusual in this area to have temperatures that low in December, so it could be a February before I know for sure.

  •    I've emailed each of you with some questions so we can provide further assistance with this concern.

I see that you have already contacted Garmin Support about this, and a ticket has been created for your experience. If you have any further questions, please continue emailing with your local Garmin office.

  • Thank you so much for sending out a new unit so quickly. Service beyond expectations. Nice one.

  • After a few weeks riding in temperatures ranging from just below freezing to 50F, I have not had any more issues. It must have been hardware related. Perhaps a connector shrinking in the cold and losing contact, or some kind of lamination-like issue with the screen layers. Regardless, the replacement unit is working fine.

  • Just wanted to report that that the replacement seems to so far have fixed the issue?
Had one cold ride the night of receiving it, 6 something, unit got to 6.9 and responded flawlessly, and a 2.8 degree ride this morning, unit got to around 5.9 iirc.

Does your screen also feel more responsive in hotter weather? I used a 1030+ in the time between the exchange which responds a lot slower, but it felt extra snappy in a good way?

  • I updated the Edge 1050 to W30.18 13/2/26 and went out the following day in -1*C. The bike is in an insulated shed, the Garmin came from the house about 18*C. For the first 20 minutes the device worked in that I could change screens and use the Garmin widget to turn the Varia light on and off with gloves on, after thirty minutes I couldn't change anything with gloves on or off. I stopped in my local coffee shop 20 miles away and when I went back to the bike I woke the Garmin up as usual but I had lost connection with the wireless sram gears, my varia and Venu 3 heart rate broadcast to the Edge 1050. I saved the ride and started a new ride for coming home but nothing came back on line despite searching for sensors. In hindsight perhaps I should have turned it off and started afresh but this is not the weather to be messing about with settings. I will try again today when / if it stops raining!

Just got back from a ride and had none of yesterday's problems but it was 7*C.
