Touchscreen stops responding below ~11°C after firmware 29.22

Issue
Since updating to 29.22, the touchscreen becomes unresponsive whenever the ambient temperature drops below about 11°C .

On the previous firmware 28.34 same issue (see ouchscreen stops responding below ~15°C after firmware 28.34)

What happens

Because I had the same Issue with firmware 28.34, I returned my Garmin 1050 and received a new device from Garmin with firmware 11.24 pre-installed.

I put the Garmin 1050 in the refrigerator for an hour. Without gloves, I could operate the display (e.g., swipe).

With gloves, the display didn't respond at all.

Then I installed firmware 29.22 and put the Garmin 1050 in the refrigerator again for an hour.

Without gloves, the display was usable. With gloves, I could occasionally operate the display (e.g., swipe). Then it would stop working again, and the display would become completely unresponsive. When I operate the Garmin 1050 without gloves, the display responds again. When I then put on my gloves, the display responds again for a while until it becomes completely unusable with gloves on.

At room temperature (20 degrees Celsius), the Garmin worked perfectly with gloves.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Use Edge 1050 on firmware 29.22   when ambient temp is < 11°C.

  2. Try to operate the touchscreen (e.g., start a ride or open Navigation).

  3. Observe that touches don’t register or are extremely delayed.

  4. Warm the device (e.g., inside a jacket) and the touchscreen works again.

Expected behavior
Touchscreen should function normally at these temperatures, as it did on the previous firmware.

Actual behavior
Touchscreen becomes effectively unusable until the device is warmed up.

Request
Please investigate and fix this regression. It’s autumn and temperatures are dropping, which makes the device very hard to use outdoors.

  • Yesterday was 3°c and my unit didn’t have any issues.

  • Had this problem several times this week. Tonight I tried holding the palm of my glove against the screen for about 30 seconds to warm it up and it responded to touches for a bit before stopping again.

  • I bought a new Garmin Edge 1050 on 15th November  2025.  I got the dreaded screen freeze/ touch screen unresponsive etc when temps are cool, below 12 -14 degrees.  I have the latest software.

Several rides since then, the same issues.  Temps between 5 and 12 degrees.  Problem improves later in morning when temp warms up a bit.

I am within the 30 day refund period.

I contacted Garmin Chat - they were of remarkably little help - saying they would "raise a case report and start the process".  This might mean my faulty garmin gets beyond the 30 day refund window  with no guarantee that Garmin would produce a solution. I have therefore decided to go back to the retailer and request a full refund.

I suspect this is a very widespread problem with the 1050 as at least one other member in my club has had the same issues.  Because his was a warranty claim Garmin took the unit back and repaired it.  I hope the repair lasts for him!

So beware of this problem and be prepared to return your Garmin 1050 if within 30 day refund period rather than asking Garmin for help.

I  feel this is all extremely unsatisfactory and the Garmin 1050 is not fit for purpose if it  cannot be guaranteed to work below 14 degrees C.

  • I have the same problem. My 1050 is 14 months old and it freezes under 14 degrees C.

  • I have same problem.  Unresponsive screen at < 12 deg C. My unit is less than 30 days old and has the latest software.  Reported to Garmin Chat - remarkably unhelpful .  Either 'return to retailer for refund' or "we will  raise a new case report".  No offer to replace the unit or even look at it. This problem is very widespread I suspect.  I am returning for a refund I hope.  I doubt I will risk another 1050.  Might get a 1040...

  • Same Issue. My Edge 1050 is 1 week old with latest Software. When i warm up the display with my hands, then the Touchscreen works temporary. Some minutes later during cyling, the display freeze.

  • I received a replacement device from Garmin.

While the Garmin 1050's display responds to input with gloves at temperatures below 11°C, a problem persists: Below this temperature, I have to press very hard with gloves for the display to register any input at all. Without gloves, however, operation works perfectly.

    TSC Version: 0.12.00

  • So is the consensus that this is a hardware problem and I should try to get a replacement? Do I need to make a video of the screen not responding in cold to send to support?

  • Posting on this thread as well, same problem here. My 1050 was bought right at release, so however old that is. When the temperature falls to the 40s (freedom units), the screen becomes unresponsive to touch. Last winter I probably just assumed it was a glove issue and didn't bother, because I don't touch the screen that often when riding.
