Is there a way to keep edge 1050 from turning on when charging?

It seems, often when I plug my Edge 1050 in to charge it.......it turns on by default.   Is there a way to stop it from doing this? My prior few Garmin Edge devices did not seem to do this...but instead just showed a screen with a battery and % charged.    With the 1050, it seems most often to turn on.....and then turn on my radar and lights in the next room, which is kind of a waste and I then have to manually power it down.   I usually fully power down/off my device by long holding and choosing power off.....but still when I plug in the USB C adapter....it often seems to power back on.

  • No, Garmin insists that this absurd behavior is "a feature" and resists adding a real feature which would be giving us a toggle to turn this stupidity off.

  • That was the exact phrase the Garmin representative used after doing some research, when I asked them why my 1050 was reporting the incorrect gear as 1 out of 12, rather than the correct one....after overnight nonuse or even brief water breaks on a ride.   We think that that may be a "Feature" of the 1050.  (When asked why my 530 always reported the correct gear).   It makes little sense, but I guess it is a way for them to not admit a bug, or perhaps that there could be a simple improvement.   I agree, a toggle would work well......or even just leave it the way it was for most, if not all of my prior Garmin Edge units.....when you plug it in to charge it...leave it OFF....with exception of showing the % charged on the screen.  Those who want it ON.....(which I expect are not many)....can hit the ON button.  The reverse, makes little sense to me.   Thanks for the reply.

  • and the real pain of it, is that when I charge it...and it turns on.....it often seems to be close enough to turn on the radar and the lights, but for some reason NOT close enough to do it properly....and instead of waiting for the timer to turn on (the setting on my Garmin), I find the lights in a different area of my house....two rooms over...are now blinking and need to be shut off.   I guess I may have to get in the habit of turning OFF the sensor radar control and light control....EVERY time I go to charge the Garmin...and then hopefully remember to turn the sensors of both back ON...after charging is complete.   Not quite a bonus feature, IMO, lol.

  • I agree, its a pain and Garmin's logic doesnt make sense. I get that they want the unit to operate if plugged in for those that use a portable battery while riding. But that should not mean it automatically turns on when you charge it. Its a pain and no other device works that way.

  • See this thread where Garmin states the behavior is as per design… Wonder what they had for a drink when designing this LOL.

  • I would think that the number of people who use this with a backup battery are the minority and they could just hit the ON button, if they are using one.   (or else adding a toggle button for them to turn on for battery use).  Also, don't the backup batteries use the metal contacts on the Garmin mount?   They could just set it to turn on if those specific power contacts are in use. Seems like they are just making and excuse for a bug that they don't want to fix.

  • My Edge 1030+ does that as well. Very annoying....

  • Hello, and thanks for your feedback. This behavior is intentional per my replies in this related Garmin forum thread.

The charging logic in your Garmin device prevents it from being 'overcharged' and there is no effect on the performance of the battery if it is only partially discharged before charging it again. The Edge 1050 and most newer Edge devices can be charged while in use. The Edge 1050 can be powered off while charging, but will continue to display a charging status on screen, and will power on again when external power is lost (device is unplugged).

We are tracking and reviewing your feedback to see if any changes can be made, though no changes are planned at this time. For specifics about charging please review our FAQs below:

  • Thank you for the reply.  Please consider at least a toggle for those who it would make MUCH easier to have the power OFF (like me).  (like all my prior Edge computers.).   I have not figured out an easy solution to my twice weekly charges...but at present, my lights and radar in another room WASTE power while this charges, since they go on when this Edge 1050 goes on.   I guess I could go through the process of turning OFF the radar and lights MANUALLY every time I charge, but that kind of defeats the purpose and convenience of the Garmin controlling the devices.   Also, even if I set my lights to go on and off just with the timer function......it still manages to go on about 50% of the time perhaps because I am charging a couple rooms from my bike, so the control of the lights and radar is kind of quirky at that distance.   Charging should not be this complicated.  Again, please come up with a fix.

  • The most annoyung thing for me is, that it turns on, when you pull the plug after charging. It simply makes no sense. You always habe to wait for the unit to start and to turn it off manually after charging.

It is good that you can charge the units during an activity from a powerbank, I use this quite often during lomg events.

In the end the units should just stay in the state (on/off) it was set by the user without autpmatically starting or turning off in any case.
