Powering on when plugging in or unplugging

My Garmin Edge 1050 powers on when I plug it in to charge. I can power it off but then once I unplug it, it powers on again. Is there a setting or workaround to keep it powered off in these scenarios? It's a nuisance having to wait for it to finish booting up so that I can power it down. Waste of time and mAh.

  • Agree, does not make sense like a lot of stuff Garmin does with their software.

  • I have the same issue, hopefully they'll fix it soon

  • Yep - silly.  I'm here looking how to disable this.  I did not ride for a couple of weeks and it was flat.  You have to remember to turn it off after downloading a ride otherwise if you don't use it for two weeks it's flat.

  • I have a 1050 and a 830. When I plugin the 830 to charge it, it will only charge and not startup. When I do the same with the 1050 I always have to shut it down after plugging in. I really don’t understand why they have changes the behavior of that in the later models. The behavior of the 830 was perfect to me.

  • I have an antique 1030 which does the same thing. No problem to just power off.

  • I’m experiencing the same issue with my Edge 1050. As soon as I plug it in to charge, it powers on and starts forming the light network. If I try to shut it down too quickly, the lights stay on, so I have to wait for the full boot cycle before powering it off again. It’s definitely frustrating and wasn’t an issue with any of my previous Edge units—including the 1030 and 1000. I really miss the old behavior where it would just charge without powering on unless prompted. Not sure why Garmin changed this, but it feels like a step backward.

  • same here, very annoying

  • i have the same issue, it is very annoying, and unclear if charging continues...

  • I can confirm that it will charge. What I'm doing as a workaround is just letting it go to sleep while it's charging. It's quicker to wake up when I unplug it, so I don't have to wait as long to fully power it down. Still not ideal though.

  • Hello and thanks for your post.

This is intentional behavior, the Edge 1050 will power on when connected to external power. The Edge 1050 can be powered off while charging, but will continue to display a charging status on screen, and will power on again when external power is lost (device is unplugged).

The charging logic in your Garmin device prevents it from being 'overcharged' and there is no effect on the performance of the battery if it is only partially discharged before charging it again. The Edge 1050 and most newer Edge devices can be charged while in use.
