Coarse Point distance

In the past, Coarse Point distance would show the distance to the next turn.  Now is seems to only show distance to the end of the coase.  My routes are generated on RWGPS.  Any ideas on how to make this work again?

  • RWGPS has always been slow to update their app.

It looks like they are on the conservative side and only want to release it on devices they physically test it on.

The point of IQ is that you don’t really need to do that.

Also, the fact that RWGPS can work with Garmin to sync RWGPS routes makes their IQ app less necessary.

As it happens, it’s easy to release my app for new devices  including watches, which RWGPS doesn’t support at all. (My apps are used more by watch users.)

To give RWGPS their due (and they are due a lot), they make it fairly easy to get to their data (that is, they are fairly open). No other company appears to come close to what RWGPS provides. My apps rely on this openness.

  • After further testing, I can confirm.  Pining the course in RWGPS loads the course through GC and GC strips out course points.  If I export the fit file to my computer, then copy it to the new files folder in the edge, then course points are preserved and the course point distance works.  Also a new screeen show up which lists all course points.

  • Your original post stated that the course point distances previously worked. How were you downloading courses then?

  • You’ll also get the course points if you use GRouteLoader (or the RWGPS app).

Course points were originally created to provide turn instructions for devices that did not have maps. When exporting course from Garmin Connect, course points were included for devices that did not have maps and did not include them for devices with maps.

As far as I understand, the syncing of RWGPS routes via GC entails copying the RWGPS course to GC. If that’s the case, then you’ll get whatever GC decides to do. Does the RWGPS course show up in your course list on GC?

Put another way, if you want regular course points, don’t involve GC.

The “new screen” is the course point screen. You’ll see it if the file has course points and course points are enabled for the course on the device.

Note that, when using files, you’ll only get course points from FIT or TCX files (not GPX).

If you are a bit of a tech-head, try looking at a TCX file in a text editor. (GPX files are text too.) You’ll understand what is going on a bit better. (FIT is a binary file.)

  • Usure how I was loading when course points worked.  Could have been copying the fit file to new files or using ther RWGPS CIQ app (on an 830, not the 1050 which I upgraded to earlier this year).  Now that I understand what is going on.  I can find a way forward.
