Powering on when plugging in or unplugging

My Garmin Edge 1050 powers on when I plug it in to charge. I can power it off but then once I unplug it, it powers on again. Is there a setting or workaround to keep it powered off in these scenarios? It's a nuisance having to wait for it to finish booting up so that I can power it down. Waste of time and mAh.

  • Thanks for your answer. I can tell you the intentional behavior is far from user friendly then. When I plugin my 830 to charge it then it will only charge. When it is done charging and I unplug it I can just put it away as it won’t startup. And when I want to charge it while in use I can turn it on when it is charging. Simple as that.

when I want to charge this 750 euro 1050 device I have to shut it down just after connecting to power and again when disconnecting from power. So what was working perfectly with the 830 the design team managed to break and then call it improvement.

I really don’t understand that approach and am very disappointed by this ‘improvement’…

  • for what reason do you power the Edge off after plugging it in to charge?
It may be simpler to plug the Edge 1050 in to charge and to power the device off only after it is done being charged.

We understand this is not how you expect the device to work, your feedback helps us tell our engineers 'why' something could be improved.

  • It makes no sense to power on a device when charging its battery so why would I leave it on? It consumes energy for nothing. Do the Garmin Varia headlights also turn on when you want to charge them? Are electrical cars also turning on when you want to charge their batteries. No they don’t. It makes no sense to power something on that is not in use. Simple as that.

  • on top of other answers if you use powerbank and you're on a trip so chagrining spots are sparse you need to watch like a hawk for the moment Edge fully charges and wakes with screen on at full brightness (still not fixed) or you'll wake in the morning to empty powerbank. Which can mean setting alarm in the middle of the night (been there).

  • and will power on again when external power is lost (device is unplugged).

I think your engineers (or whoever is responsible for "user experience") assume that we ride every day.  In which case powering it on when I unplug it each morning makes sense: come home, plug it in, upload, sleep, wake up and ride.

I'm happy to share my "workflow" if you like but... all I'm asking for is a simple option:

    • "Action when device is unplugged?" with the options "Turn On" or "Turn Off".
  • Thanks all for your feedback and your participation in the Garmin Forums.

This charging behavior is as designed; newer Edge devices will power on when connected to or disconnected from a power source.
There are no plans to make any changes to this device behavior at this time.

For specifics about charging please review our FAQs below:

  • I really wonder what was going on in the designers head then when they designed this behavior… I don’t think that anyone is in favor of this behavior. But why would you listen to your users ;-)

Maybe you can open a poll to who likes it or not.
