Coming from an edge 1030, which works easily with a Mac. Just plug it in and normal Finder operations work for file transfers.
is that not the case for the 1050? Is there an alternative approach that works well with a Mac?
thanks

I had the same experience initially. OpenMTP in recent Edge1050 firmware now works fine on Mac. I have a 2019 Intel Mac. No special download links necessary.
Loading courses can be done by importing them into Garmin Connect (web or app) and syncing the Edge 1050 with the Connect app.
Garmin Topo Active maps (replacing the Cycle Maps) can be downloaded from…
https://openmtp.ganeshrvel.com
Available both for apple silicon and intel macs.
Garmin Express and search for Google's (now discontinued) AndroidFileTransfer.dmg. Those are the only MTP file macOS transfer software packages that work with the Edge 1050. The Garmin moderators won't allow links to Google'sAndroid FileTransfer.dmg for "security reasons". I had trouble transferring a course to the Edge 1050 using the iOS Connect app. I did eventually get that to work though.
