Anyone coming to the 1050 from a 1030 plus?

I have been riding with the 1030 plus for almost three years now.  No complaints.  Computer works well, does what I ask of it, and battery life is good.

But the 1030 plus seems to be end of life.  No updates are forthcoming and the computer does drop sensors routinely.  The display is also hard to read as my eyes get older.

So.  Question. Did anyone here with a 1050 upgrade from the 1030plus?  And if so, do you think the upgrade was worth the cost?

Thank you.

  • So far I have not had the reboot issues but I am on the BETA. I thought the same about hazards but after using it, it is a nicety I like.

  • All good info from the replies.  I guess I just need to make a decision.  Does the 1050 have enough features to justify me dumping the working 1030 plus?  Sounds like the 1050 is a good machine and will definitely meet my needs.  And I am sure I will be happy a new machine.  Heck who doesn't like new tech?

And the 1030 plus is getting long in the tooth.  Released in 2020, the machine is coming up to five years old.

    Decisions, decisions...

  • My experience with battery life is that the battery lasts plenty long for any ride I may (ever!) do.  I routinely get over 40 hours without using navigation.  If you plan to do multi-day rides without access to electricity, you might be disappointed with the 1050.  Note: I have my display brightness set to 30%.  Shane Miller (GPlama) says he sets his to 60%, and he's happy with battery life.  I think back to the Edge 1000 for a unit with too short battery life - you were "at risk" doing a century (100 mile) ride.

  • Based on your original criteria of the 1030 plus not getting updates. Yes. You can always try to sell the 1030.

  • But it’s NOT a working 1030 is it. It drops sensors…. So?

  • Oh. No.  The 1030 plus works fine.  Battery holds the charge.  Navigation works as it should.  Etc.  The sensor dropping is a known issue with the 1300 plus.  Not specific to my unit.

My thinking in moving over to the 1050 is mainly driven by the display.  I think the brighter display will help me see the screen while riding because I do not wear my prescription glasses while riding and I sometimes have a hard time reading the output on the screen.

The battery life likely isn't an issue for me since I do not do any major rides where the batter would die on me mid-ride.  And if I did ever have rides like that, I'd just revert back to the 1030 plus.

The 1030 plus is working though.

It's roughly a billion times brighter than the 1040 solar I had which was about as bright as my several years old 1030.

  • I have a 1030 plus.  I often ride with a friend who has a 1040 solar.  We ride gravel and always use navigation.  We are using the same route and he gets these weird bugs while navigating.  When these bugs show up he'll ask me to come see the bug.  I've never had the same bugs on my 1030 plus.  My 1030 has been super reliable.  It makes me not want to upgrade to the 1040 or the 1050.

  • Thank you.  This is good feedback.

Just as you state, the 1030 plus has been super reliable.  While the sensor dropping is annoying, they usually get picked up right away again.  There is only the odd time when the power meter gets dropped and refuses to automatically get picked up again.  Then I have to go into the menus and add the sensor.  Annoying while on a ride.  I keep hoping there will be an update but the 1030 plus seems to be end of life.

The screen brightness, as others have said here though, is definitely a plus.  I could benefit from that as I do not wear any prescription glasses while riding and sometimes have a hard time reading my numbers.

I have a discount code for the 1050 though which is what prompted me to start thinking about maybe upgrading.

  • So I came from a 1030+ and have the 1050 for about 2 weeks now.

During sub 4 degrees celcius, the screen will stop responding to capacitive glove input.

No possibility to navigate to an adress when you have an android phone (like seriously wtf,  they have it working on apple,  who have restricted usability of their watches since the apple watch came out, but they got this working there since launce but F the android users?)

No recent backups of profiles, one was made the day I set up the 1050, got pasted the date I had to hard reset it,  bit only contained the profiles that came from the 1030+...  There should be a "backup now"  option in settings, but either that's again apple exclusive or just not there.

Charging causes the unit to boot up instead of "sleeping" like the 1030+, which in turn will have it also wake up any connected lights.

I do love that you can now plot a round trip course diagonally as well instead of only the 4 cardinal directions (a pain in my area of living)

Battery life is fine,  I run the screen at like a 20% brightness and wouldn't have had to charge it for my commute runs yet (road bike is out of commission).

I'm having massively mixed feelings about what's on offer for the price combined with the issues I'm running into, even given that I could get it (from a reputable store) with a decent discount.
