Anyone coming to the 1050 from a 1030 plus?

I have been riding with the 1030 plus for almost three years now.  No complaints.  Computer works well, does what I ask of it, and battery life is good.

But the 1030 plus seems to be end of life.  No updates are forthcoming and the computer does drop sensors routinely.  The display is also hard to read as my eyes get older.

So.  Question. Did anyone here with a 1050 upgrade from the 1030plus?  And if so, do you think the upgrade was worth the cost?

Thank you.

  • Depends on your needs and budget. I upgraded from the 1030 plus to the 1050. I think the 1050 is the best Garmin Edge product they have ever made. If you are quite content with the 1030 plus, then continue. Unless you want a definite feature (to me, the screen is worth it) the 1030 plus is still a capable device. FWIW.

  • I've had the 1030, 1040 solar, and now the 1050. The 1050 is better in every possible way. It was a nice upgrade from the 1040 solar, and a totally different world from the 1030, the screen especially. Go for it.

  • "...the screen especially.."

Of course we all know that there is NO free lunch, the much brighter 1050 screen comes at the significant cost of increased power usage & therefore decreased battery life. The x30 devices were pretty good, I used to get 40-45 hours from mine, the x40 devices have amazing battery life, I get 90-100 hours from my 1040 (non-solar) BUT the 1050 is reported to get 20-40 hours, Garmin says 20 with "demanding" (normal?) settings, more (60) if minimal, this might be all you want, if so indeed "go for it" but if battery life is important for you then focus on what you would get with your requirements.

Regarding "..as my eyes get older.." the 1050 does have the major plus of a bigger location cursor on the map, a trivial cost enhancement denied to x40 users by garmin.

  • My 1030 plus was dead after exact 4 years (screen did not turn on anymore). I think it was a great (except the 4 years lifespan). I used it a lot for navigating my created courses (with Alltrails). I have sensors for HRM, speed, Ralley, di2 and radar/light. No problems with connecting.

I now bought 1050. Screen is fabulous. However navigating has pros and cons comparing to 1030 plus:

Pros: screen is very good; Turn guidance is way better, speed of refreshing is better.
Cons: No 3D view, autozoom does not work (it is on).

Further, all the warnings (dangerous situations) driving me crazy. I turned that off; the accuracy of the gradient is way better (delay is now 1 or 2 seconds)

Ringing bell is handy, I programmed a button on my steer.

Should I bought a 1050 if my 1030 plus was not dead? No. The 1030 plus was good enough for me, except the annoying Gradient display.

  • I don't need a car with a 100 gallon tank. I can just go to the gas station when I'm running low.

My 1050 has better battery life than my 1040 solar because the 1040 solar had to be on full backlight all the time (except if there was sun on it).

The 1050 has far more than enough battery life. Just charge the thing.

  • Great feedback everyone.  Thank you for sharing your thoughts.  I have no issues with the 1030 plus.  Battery life is good.  I do not do a lot of routes requiring turn by turn guidance.  Maybe 10 or rides that have turn by turn guidance enabled a year.  The rest are just rides in and around my area that I know like the back of my hand.

Sounds like the 1050 is a good machine and has some nice improvements over the 1030 plus.  My concern is the 1030 plus is not getting any more updates, which is shame.  I understand the hardware is old now, but I still would like some updates - specifically around the dropping of sensors.

Guess I just need to make a decision and live with it.

  • It is fantastic

Sounds like the 1050 is a good machine
  • My 5 cents worth. Give up hoping the 1030+ will ever be fixed for dropping sensors and go for the 1050. That’s what I did and my frustrations are much reduced.

  • I upgraded to a 1050 from the 1040. The reason for my upgrade was almost entirely the display. The display of the 1040 is only ok in bright sunlight from the top, as soon the sunlight comes from a lower angle, such as in the evening, the 1040 display becomes harder to read. The 1050 is always readable, has vibrant colors, and the map displays finer details. The operation of the 1050 is close to the 1040, but the 1050 is faster and more responsive. Sensors connect much quicker and more reliable. The operation time per charge is lesser than with the 1040, but that doesn’t bother me. Currently it is cold, and I use my 1050 mostly for my rides to work and shopping, which takes about 3 tom10 kilometers daily. In that conditions, the last time, I charged my 1050 three weeks ago and I still have 25% charge. When my longer weekend rides start again in spring, I am prepared to recharge my 1050 after the ride. For emergency, I have the battery pack from Garmin, which gives me enough power, even if I forgot the charge of the 1050 before the ride,

Would I recommend to buy the 1050? Normally, yes, definitely. But currently? No, since operation is unstable because of the reboot issues and Garmin fails to fix this in an acceptable time. I have these issues since three weeks and such severe faults should be fixed much quicker. I see no time frame, when the issues will be solved. Until now, it is even not clear, if the reboot issues could be fixed with firmware at all, at least there is no statement from Garmin as such. Ultimately, it could be a hardware problem, and I wonder what Garmin would do in such a case.

So, unfortunately, currently no recommendation, although I like my 1050 very much - when it works.

It would be different, if Garmin would give a statement that it has fixed the reboot issues, but need more time for testing the firmware to be released.

  • Thank you.  I was not aware of the issue with the reboot issue.

Your comment about the screen is the main reason that I want to upgrade from the 1030.  I increase in speed of the processor is a nice bonus too.  I find that as I age my eyesight is not as good as it used to be.  I think the bright display would be a huge improvement.

A lot of the social features, such as pointing out hazards or group rides, I do not think will be of much use to me.  But the improved sensor connectivity and the better screen is definitely tempting.
