Touchscreen freezes 1050

First ride witth the new 1050.

TouchScreen totaly freezes for complete ride. Even when powered of and on several times.

No reaction or whatever  with gloves off.

Taken of the mount in home everything seems te be allright temperature outside was 4 degrees above freezing point

Didnt have this with the 1040 solar, 1030 and the older models.

What tofdo now?

  • It could also be a power supply problem if it only happens in the cold.

Batteries lose capacity in the cold. Perhaps the batch of batteries installed is of poor quality and also loses voltage.

Usually CPU's do not like this at all and show abnormal behavior.

On the videos it sometimes looks like "lags". The CPU may "overlook" the touch input.

Whether the idea is nonsense could be checked to a limited extent by connecting a power bank as soon as the case appears.

I hope for my sake that I am wrong. I don't want to have bought a paperweight either.

  • I have been for several rides in 41degC plus with no issues with touchscreen responsiveness.

  • You know,  that tardiness in the screen I've had that too, I thought it was just the screen itself not liking the cold and the pixels switching slower because of that.

The 1030 plus having another kind of screen which didn't have that problem was the explanation I came up with in my head to explain it.

A possible solution would be to run some background tasks (that may even be beneficial to faster map performance for instance)  during cold operations to have the cpu act as a heater? It will cause more battery drain, I personally would prefer that choice vs a non responsive input.

If you've got say 4 possible causes/solutions,  throw them all under a drop down menu or toggle and paste that in a beta or special firmware that is not testing for other bugs/changes and let us have a go at it during the next cold weather.

I'm sure there are enough people here who experience the issues that are willing to try it out.

  • Don't think it's a temperature thing. My screen froze today about 30 minutes into my ride and it was 10 degrees Celsius. I was able to hold the power button for about 10 seconds to get it to shut down, and then it started back up. I was out in -2 degrees Celsius a few weeks ago with no problems.

  • I think it depends on the temperature. I have also had problems up to +- 10`C. However, at freezing temperatures from - 1°C I have no problems either. Then the touchscreen works.

  • touchscreen effect in cold temperatures not affected all units. In a cold ride me and my friend (both 1050) and the same glove of coarse , my friends worked normaly and mine not . When I pause workout switch off and on again and resume then touchscreen works again . We both have gelly screen protector. In the past I try to remove screen protector but no difference in cold conditions.

  • Thank you, for some of the conclusions you have so far. I have used my 1050 in the two months I have device mostly in outdoor temperatures from -10 to +10 degrees celsius. I mostly record my rides and only occasionally have used navigation so far. I have four sensors connected: cadence, speed, remote control, and the heart rate sensor of my Epix 2. Due to the season, I did only short urban rides within 2 to 15 km distance. No group rides, no climbs, no special training features. Map source is the standard garmin cycling map with max details. I added lidar elevation contour lines as a map source. I use the Connect IQ CleanMapField#3 data field on the map page. No screen protector.

These are my use cases and device configuration, so far.

The problems (besides some bugs) with my 1050 are so far the random reboots, which seem to be fixed with 12.16. But I never had the touchscreen freezing. During my rides, I use mostly the remote control for page changes. I have used touch screen for map zoom and map movements, menu operations, saving a ride and navigating to on the main screen.

  • You might be on to something there. Last week I did a 100km where the average temperature was 4deg c and I had no issues but I had navigation running. Normally I’d expect the screens to freeze but it didn’t

  • Same problem here, in cold conditions (also inside when riding on the Tacx in the garage) the touch sensitivity disappears. I really have to push multiple times to get a response, which does not even work all of the time. Once inside again and keeping the edge 1050 on for a while to acclimatise, the screen sensitivity normalises again. I give consent to Garmin for reaching out to me by email if you have further questions.

  • Last few rides when the temperature was between 0-5 degrees Celsius the touch screen wasn’t working.

Last Friday I did a long ride and now the temperature was around 15 degrees. No problem at all. The touchscreen was working perfectly for the whole ride.
