Touchscreen freezes 1050

First ride witth the new 1050.

TouchScreen totaly freezes for complete ride. Even when powered of and on several times.

No reaction or whatever  with gloves off.

Taken of the mount in home everything seems te be allright temperature outside was 4 degrees above freezing point

Didnt have this with the 1040 solar, 1030 and the older models.

What tofdo now?

  • It is not an absurd idea. It is simply an idea. This is a forum for this discussion of ideas and solutions, NOT a place to just bash Garmin.

    • if there were a correlation that some users had the protective cases, maybe a screen protector too, it is plausible that, sweat, moisture, dirt, anything electrically conductive, perhaps touching the edges of the new curved capacitive screen, maybe having an affect.
    • so far as reported by respondents, it does not seem to be correlated.
  • it depends on the temperature. i was at a training camp in spain last two weeks and had no problems. this week back home in the cold temperatures and i am experiencing the same touchscreen problems again.

  • So a week or so ago I pulled off the savies screen protector and it would still be wonky for a couple of days afterwards,  but I just had a ride with around - 4 degrees C reported temperatures and a system temperature that bottomed at -0 / - 0.1 (previously being 4.4 degrees where the screen stopped responding).

It was working normally, swipes, presses were all being processed.

If you have a "gel" screen protector, give it a go and keep it off for a week and clean the screen a couple of times.

  • A case protection? What does a case have to do with a screen? that's absurd. complete nonsense. But it's not me wasting time. you're welcome to try and prove otherwise.

  • Another ride yesterday, and the touchscreen was useless.

Temperature was just under 7°c, according to my tempe, so nothing crazy.

Very tempted to try and return the device at this point. I've already got video evidence that I sent to Garmin about the problem, and the touchscreen not working at all in the cold is a pretty big problem imo.

  • I am very disappointed so far. In my opinion this is a hardware issue and there is no solution coming... I had to go ahead and buy the garmin 1040 to be able to log and train since these cold days the 1050 is useless.

Actually, I am very concerned since I put the 1050 up for sale for about 500eu and I got no response for about 10 days now. So far I have spent 1280€ because the 750€ 1050 doesn't work.

Thanks to whoever ever designed the 1050...

  • So had an ride with 3 degrees C again today and this time it failed yet again, unit temperature was around 2.6 to 4.8ish degrees from what I could see.

It did still keep working with my hands...

When the workout (low heart rate)  was over and I could ride full force to warm up a bit again,  the screen became more responsive...

It doesn't make sense,  but do cold objects work differently from warmer ones on a capacitive screen?

I'm tempted to throw a hotdog in the fridge and see if that still works on a unit that was in the fridge as well...

Do you guys have any form of update for us? It's very frustrating having a cycling computer (and a very, very premium one at that) that's inconsistent in if it works or not.

  • Thanks for the added details.

I do not have an update just yet, and the reports we've received of touch screen performance in cold temperatures vary. We are investigating these reports to make changes that will improve performance for some use-cases. I will update here with more info when available.

Garmin does not make or recommend the use of screen protectors. Our silicone cases/protectors are mainly intended to increase grip, and are not expected to impact touch screen performance.

  • Thanks for the update Clayton.

When you say, some use-cases, does that mean you know the source of the problem?

  • I am not seeing reports of touch screen becoming unresponsive in hot weather, for example. When I have more details I will share them here so that users can validate for their specific use.
