Touchscreen freezes 1050

First ride witth the new 1050.

TouchScreen totaly freezes for complete ride. Even when powered of and on several times.

No reaction or whatever  with gloves off.

Taken of the mount in home everything seems te be allright temperature outside was 4 degrees above freezing point

Didnt have this with the 1040 solar, 1030 and the older models.

What tofdo now?

  • I had the same problem on my last 2 rides with temps around 30F. I noticed that the touchscreen was very slow and unresponsive to touches. When I would attempt to use the touch screen I noticed that I would have to basically hold my finger on what I wanted to select for it to recognize my touch. I left it powered on and in my warm vehicle for a few minutes and it went back to normal. The touch screen performance definitely seems to be majorly affected by the cold.

  • Also having the same problem with my device, last 2 rides outside the touch screen doesn’t work and they have probably been at 3degC. I have been using gloves for those rides but a different pair each time.

  • I contacted customer support the other day and they asked me for a video. I went on another ride today and the touchscreen was useless but the start/stop button still functioned. I sent them the video of it happening and they said they want to replace it. Hopefully in a few weeks when I get it and test it the problem is not present.

  • Tommorrow i will do a ride at freezing point 0 degrees celcius. I will check again and make a video also.

  • Hi,

I've had this exact issue on my last two rides, when temperature drops around 5/4Cº. Touchscreen gets totally irresponsive with hands (cannot swap data fields screen - I've tried with hands despite the temperature because it's not even worth discussing with touchscreen sensitive gloves - simply not working).

I have to try multiple times to get something and 3 times out of 4, the device register the swap as a tap and shows me the interface to get back home / ring the bell instead of the next screen.

When I get back home, a few minutes later, everything gets back to normal again as the temperature is above 22ºC inside.

It's a very annoying issue when you ride all winter with a 750€ device... Didn't have that problem on my 830.

Is it just a software issue ? Because if it's hardware and not solvable, it's simply not acceptable

    Thanks for the help.

    Regards,

    Romain

  • Hi,

Where are we at with this issue ?

I've exactly the same problem with my brand new 1050 (bought for Christmas)

When temperature drops around 5ºc screen gets highly unresponsive (cannot swap data screens - 3 out of 4 gesture don't do anything and the fourth is recognized as a tap, therefore showing me the "get back home" or "bell ring" screen).

And this description goes for clean-bare hands tries despite the temperature! I have touch sensitive gloves that works great with everything, after a few tries I don't even hope for it to work, so I just take it out to try my luck.

It's highly deceptive and problematic for a 750€ device. Didn't have that problem on the 830.

Is it software or hardware? If it's hardware and not solvable, people need to know about it !

    Thanks.

    Regards,

    Romain

  • Exactly this... come on Garmin give us info, and  i expect you allready know this and tested it.

Can you fix this with updates? Or what is the plan?

Dont leave us in the cold, did have the 820, 1030, 1040 Solar that worked well in freezing temperatures.

    Regards Jos

  • The replacement they are sending me for this issue has the same part number as the original so I don't have high hopes of it being any better. But I'm hoping for the best.

Edit: Also they are not charging me for replacement. That's just a deposit so that they send me the new one first before I send mine back. I didn't want to go 2-3 weeks without my computer.

  • We are continuing to investigate these reports, their root cause, and an expected resolution. I will update this thread and reach out to all users with more info when available.

  • Thanks for reaching out to Garmin support for your region. We are bringing your Edge 1050 in to evaluate and help us confirm reports that we have seen here.

Edit: It appears also reported a separate hardware concern with the display. We do not need any additional details regarding touchscreen performance, and I cannot say for sure that the replacement Edge 1050 is expected to perform different in this regard.

I do not have any additional details at this time, but we do expect to resolve this touchscreen performance concern.
