Edge controls with Trek Ion 200 RT

Hi there!

Is anyone using an Edge 10XX with a Trek Ion 200 RT light? (Specifically the version that is now branded Trek, not the Bontrager branding). I have just bought one to replace a previous Bontrager Ion 200 RT, and with my Edge 1050, it pairs fine, but I can only turn it on or off using the edge controls. I can't specify flash mode using the controls on the edge. If the light is off, and I select flash, it stays off. If the light is solid, and I select flash, it will stay on, but still solid.

I've tried pairing the light with my older Edge 1030 Plus, and I still have the same problem. But I didn't have this issue with the previous Bontrager light, nor is it a problem with another Bontrager Ion 200 RT light that we own.

Basically, I'm trying to find out if there has been some change when Trek rebranded that might have somehow upset the controls when paired with the edge, or whether mine might be faulty in some way (all the flash modes still work when it's manually controlled on the light).

Cheers,

Anthony.

  • As I understood the developer of smart bike lights a problem with this setup (ion pro rt, ion 200 rt and rear flare rt) that Garmin often found rear light faster than front and decided that rear light is the main and so front light that must be as the main controller not found after this. I tried for test setup front garmin varia ut800 and rear Flare rt and no any problems during week test…and opposite the first ride with ion pro instead varia caused problem. Only solution is to use smart bike lights or manual on/off the lights. For now I swapped  rear flare rt on Varia 515 and all works like a charm with smart bike lights.

  • That's very interesting - I think that is a different problem to the Trek vs Bontrager branding, but that does explain some of the behaviour I see sometimes.

  • Chrisgen17, we haven't found a solution, other than to use the Smart Bike Lights App. It is capable of setting the different modes manually, although I personally have not been able to successfully use the app configurator to correctly label the settings. This means I just have to chose "Mode 7" for my front light for flashing. So that is a solution, but it means you will need to manage the lights using a separate screen in the activity profile, rather than as part of the controls.

    Translation from Deepl:

  • Some days ago I updated on 12.10 fw and this issue with flashing on Trek Ion200 didn’t fixed

#Garmin, please, check light command needed for flash mode and fix this.
