Edge controls with Trek Ion 200 RT

Hi there!

Is anyone using an Edge 10XX with a Trek Ion 200 RT light? (Specifically the version that is now branded Trek, not the Bontrager branding). I have just bought one to replace a previous Bontrager Ion 200 RT, and with my Edge 1050, it pairs fine, but I can only turn it on or off using the edge controls. I can't specify flash mode using the controls on the edge. If the light is off, and I select flash, it stays off. If the light is solid, and I select flash, it will stay on, but still solid.

I've tried pairing the light with my older Edge 1030 Plus, and I still have the same problem. But I didn't have this issue with the previous Bontrager light, nor is it a problem with another Bontrager Ion 200 RT light that we own.

Basically, I'm trying to find out if there has been some change when Trek rebranded that might have somehow upset the controls when paired with the edge, or whether mine might be faulty in some way (all the flash modes still work when it's manually controlled on the light).

Cheers,

Anthony.

  • Hi, I have the same Trek lights: no problem. Try downloading the Bontrager app on IQ and using it
  • Thanks - I can't find a Bontrager app, do you meant the 'Smart Lights' app authored by maca88?

  • That could be an option when these lights fail - I don't want to replace them, as I also ride a Trek bike, and I do like having the integrated mounts. But not being able to control them reliably from the edge is a big downside.

  • Hi. I’m using this setup and rear Varia 515. Yes, for with Garmin light network trek ion 200 works like yours. But with Smartbikelight all is ok (for several years used this data field in case that Garmin is very very unstable). At the same time Bontrager ion pro rt works in all modes with Garmin network

  • Looks like Smart Lights will work. I still need to do a configuration file for it, but even without it, I did at least get the flash modes to work with the front light. And you're right, the in built smartlight controls have always been unstable with the Bontrager lights. Thanks everyone!

  • Having the same problem with the rebranded Trek Ion Pro RT with a Garmin Edge 840.  Can only turn on and off via the on screen controls, no flash functionality.  Tried re pairing and resetting to factory default, no luck.  Also tried the "Smart Lights" app and it too has the same problem.  Smart Lights app can turn on steady light in high, medium and low.  But the other buttons don't do anything so no flash via the app.  I tried using the Smart Lights configurator and it gives an "Error 3" unless I switch back to the default buttons.

  • Yeah - I found Smart Lights did work reasonably well, but as soon as I used a configuration string to try and properly label the buttons it just broke and wouldn't connect to the lights anymore.

And all that aside, I still found problems where it wouldn't always connect to both lights, or even would suddenly decide to pair with my wife's lights. As someone else said above, Garmin controls have always been unstable (at least with these lights), and I've given up and just gone back to manually turning them to the mode I want. Quite disappointing really.
