Strange "Crash" last ride (Display freeze)

Hello,

encountered a strange sort-of-crash last ride:

- after around 30km the display was frozen. Buttons did not do anything, looked like a complete crash

- after another 10km im managed to turn it off (i thought) using long presses on power and lap button (it was hard cause I was wearing long gloves and was riding in a group, so did not want to pause)

- then no restart was possible with hitting power button, the display stayed black

- at home i did fiddle around with power + lap button long press and suddenly the unit turned on again

- strange result: it showed the complete ride including all sensor data and I could save it. So the unit never really crashed.

Anyone else experienced this?

  • I also tested firmware 12.17 at home. (Leaving it on the desk and only connecting VARIA)

I couldn't reproduce it, perhaps because I paused it on the timer. (Timer was set to normal) Nothing happened even when I left it for more than 5 minutes.

When I actually rode it, it always occurred after about 10 minutes, so I thought it might be related to dimming the screen or putting it to sleep, but it seems that the conditions are not enough. The only difference from firmware 11.24 is whether I'm inside or outside the house. Another difference is whether VARIA detects the car or not. So I couldn't rule out the possibility that the temperature is related. . .

I'm going out without my bike until the beginning of next week, so I'm going to try it when I get home.

  • For me it does not always happen at the same time. sometimes it works, sometimes after an houry often earlier..,

  • I tried driving my usual course with firmware 12.17.

Freezes occur when using Battery Saver. After a forced restart, I disabled battery saver and the freeze did not occur.

I had figured it out up until this point, so to isolate the problem, I enabled Battery Saver and turned off the VARIA515. Then, even though I was using battery saver, the freeze did not occur. The battery saver function made the screen go dark, and the display returned when I touched the screen.

I had kind of expected it, but I determined that if the screen is turned off by Battery Saver, or if Battery Saver turns the screen from off to on, and at the same time VARIA515 detects a vehicle, a freeze will occur.

  •  Thanks. Sounds possible, I always use my radar while riding. But at my hometest I havent had the varia connected and it srill crashed. So not sure if it is the Varia....

At some point it would be good to get an official answer here....but seems Garmin does not care. Quite disappointing

  • yeah it's really annoying I think it's to do with the cold weather when I go for a ride it's the first thing in the morning around 5:30 I work shifts so my thought are it is to do with the cold weather early in the morning or just cold weather in general which makes the screen freeze a had no problems indoors on that indoor trainer so the weather is definitely affecting the Garmin Edge 1050

  • Exactly the same thing happened to me, I'm trying to claim the warranty but they tell me they are going to repair it, the truth is that it doesn't seem fair to me

  • I've never had any problems with replacement with Garmin my garmin Varia rtl715 stopped working the beginning of last year emailed well spoke to them on the phone and it was simply a case of return and they replaced it with a new one but that one also had a problem in the radar and camera but again phone them directly and arranged a return and a replacement so far so good try ringing them directly and see what they say the warranties I believe are for two years but I'm not too sure about that...

  • Crashes continue with 12.18. Did a "Hometest". Loaded a route, connected the varia and started recording in battery save mode.

after some time and several wakeups it crashed again. annoying.

  • After four (!) months of reporting this bug, numerous chats with the support nothing changed. No official reply from a software developer on the topic (and yes, I sent FIT-files for debugging). Only solution from the support is that I can exchange the unit, which makes no sense when it is a software bug.

Now long-distance season ist starting and the unit is unuseable for the task. I am really really annoyed. Maybe some of the official Garmin-people here on the forum ( can comment if they are working on a solution of this bug or at least admit, that they don´t care.....seriously thinking about selling the 1050, even if the display is great. But there are thankfully alternatives in the meantime.

  • still no reply in any form from Garmin on this topic. Frustrating
