Wi-Fi Sync Issues Since 10.18

I've been on all the beta firmwares, and since the 10.18 upgrade none of my rides uploaded. Had to turn off wifi and do a bluetooth sync. Removed the network and re-added, same problem. If I go to system -> about -> check for updates, it says "Transfer already in progress", but of course nothing is happening on the device. In connected features / wifi, "Wi-Fi Sync" says "connecting" - but never connects.

Checked the leases on my router, and it seems that when the unit wakes up from sleep, it's isn't renewing the lease, but wifi isn't working. A full power off / power on is required to fix wifi and sync again.

  • Thought I give an update to this since I finally figured out what was causing it.

Previously I was using an Asus XD5 router/mesh for wi-fi connected to a rooftop microwave receiver since I live in the boonies. Worked fine.

Then I updated to Starlink last year and used it both directly as a router and then in bypass mode as an internet gateway with the XD5. Both ways worked fine.

Around the first of the year Verizon 5G Home Internet became available in the area so switched to that since it had the same or better speeds for $50/mo less money. It worked fine when using it directly as a router as expected. But the issue arose when I put it into bypass mode to use as an internet gateway and connect XD5 router/mesh. While the 1050 would connect to the router and I could see in the device list of router software there is some incompatibility that causes the 1050 to never transfer any data. You can see the up/down arrows for a short time along the top bar of the 1050 but the transfer never happens. This is strange since the router works perfectly with every other device in the house in the configuration.

I'm working with Garmin support on this but don't have high hopes for a resolution since this is such an oddball problem. My 830 has the same issue so it isn't just a 1050 problem. Work around it to use BT with the Connect app.

  • The Connect app on the phone is very flaky.  When WiFi is not available I always use a hotspot from the phone to upload my rides.  The hotspot method has worked reliably.  Transfers via the phone (bluetooth) is never reliable for me, and I think the Connect app is the culprit.

I've never heard of an incompatibility issue between devices and a router.  I assume you have tried connecting the 1050 to a different WiFi network and it worked fine?

  • Can it be that the router is on WPA3 while the 1050 does not support that, i.e. only WPA2?

  • Yeah. Using BT with Connect it only seems to upload the ride after I open the Connect app since I normally don't leave it running.

I've never heard of an incompatibility but I've spent hours trying all different scenarios and trust me, it exists. And the 1050 works fine with all other wi-fi configurations I've tried. And every other device works fine with the XD5 -> Verizon network. Just the 1050 doesn't like it. It connects but no data transfer.

  • That was one of my first thoughts too. So I set the 2.4 GHz network to WPA2 only and it made no difference. The 1050 connects to the router either way but refuses to transfer data.

  • I also have a similar problem with one router not working with 830.
