Current Problems with the Edge 1050

(1) Corrupting FIT files, losing data.  Pretty much the only reason I've stayed on team Garmin for twenty years is that I never, ever lose data.

(2) The Edge 1050 doesn't detect that the unit is fully charged, and leaves the screen powered on FOREVER while charging.  I assume this is going to cause burn-in at some point.

(3) no way to write to the storage on MacOS.  So, I can't create a startup.txt or add routes.  I couldn't get MTP to work with a Windows 11 VMWare virtual machine on MacOS either.

(4) The firmware is fairly unstable.  I had it enter a crash loop the other day and needed to fully reset it.  The unit kept cycling between day and night mode and all of the sensors kept all disconnecting and reconnecting.

(5) Still no QWERTY keyboard even with the new high resolution screen.  How am I supposed to use navigation?  Nobody in the US learned to type on a ABCDEF keyboard.

(6) ConnectIQ store is busted.  Doesn't work at all.  Even on Wifi.  There's no way to search.  I had to install the TyreWiz data field app from my phone.

(7) Still no native TyreWiz support.  ConnectIQ is terrible.  It takes up to five minutes for the TyreWiz sensors to connect when I power the unit up.  If the TyreWiz sensors aren't awake when the 1050 powers on, the ConnectIQ data field still crashes.

(8) ClimbPro is busted on navigation.  I rerouted back to start last week and the climbs from the previous course were still showing up.

(9) The Varia RTL-515 errors out whenever cars approach (possibly due to vehicle lane assist).  Constant Error 0:9s and Error 0:FCs...

(10) Road hazards are inaccurate.  I get random "UNPAVED ROAD" warnings when that's not the case.  I also get "POTHOLE" warnings, when that's not the case.  The 1050 flags nearly 90% false-positives in San Francisco.

(11) Deleted all ConnectIQ fields from stored 1040 profiles.

(12) Did not add my radar as a sensor from my existing profile.

(13) Crashes on start-up most of the time.

(14) Screenshots stopped working.

  • I only have issues with the radar but I also had those on the Edge 1040. Not experiencing any of.the other issues you are referring to.

  • I've been emailing Garmin Product for over two years about Varia Error 0:9 and Error 0:FC.  Garmin actually sent me a new RTL-515, but it's a problem with Edge firmware, not the radar.  Multiple people have messaged me and said they've also warrantied their Varia units because Error 0:9 and Error 0:FC happen so frequently.  Garmin product support told me that they can't fix it.  I told them Hammerhead and Wahoo units don't error like this.  AND they have native TyreWiz support that don't require rebooting the device to connect to an ANT+ sensor.

As for these issues being on the 1040, the Varia and ConnectIQ issues have existed across all Edge units for YEARS.  The Edge 1040, Edge 1030 Plus, Edge 1030, Edge 1000, and Edge 800 never corrupted a FIT file though.  The new firmware on the 1050 is worst I've ever seen.

  • I'll add some more to the ConnectIQ apps. Windfield and the rain radar I use don't work on 1050. To initialize the Windfield you need to start your activity and then copy-paste the code that appeared inside... it's not happening here. The code is not showing up at all. The rain radar field initializes and shows it will refresh the data in some time and count to 0, then it resets and starts counting again and again... so I believe something's broken in the system that runs these fields.

  • +1 on (2). Also worried a little bit about burn-in problems. Usually keep the unit on the charger all the time after a ride. At least over night.

  • Power guides created in Garmin Connect Web don't show up on the 1050 after selecting the device as the target and performing a USB sync.

If you pause a ride and power the 1050 off (like for a coffee or lunch stop), and power the unit back up and resume your ride, all data except for distance and elapsed time prior to the power down will disappear.

  • OK so the beta firmware solved my problem with Windfield and Rain Radar ConnectIQ fields.

  • Excuse my English I use a translator ... I am French.

No more connection possible on Basecamp under MacOs

No more recognition of the 1050 under Mac OS Catalina

Error codes with the radar 515

Severe crashes on manual conversion of a GPX track to FIT

The 1050 does not go into charge mode when connected to an external power supply ... the screen always remains on

  • Further problems:

No confirmatory beep from the unit at either power-on or power-off. I frequently find after pressing the power button that the unit has not powered on. On my previous 1030+ I would get a beep at both power-on and power-off

Route recalculation *never* succeeds - I invariably get an error msg at the bottom of the screen saying that it has failed.

Cannot access any files on the 1050 via USB connection to Android - some problem with Garmin's MTP implementation - can never switch the connection to be controlled by the phone, so not possible to do any file transfers. I can access other MTP devices via USB to my phone OK, but not the 1050.
