Who already has the E1050 and what are the impressions?

Users of the new E1050, share your impressions - is the new Edge a big qualitative leap compared to the previous E1040 model and is it worth investing a few hundred on new hardware after changes to the firmware (23/09Beta) and adding a few functionalities?

  • I tried to search for *.kmtf files on the device, but I was unable to start the search. The new 1050 device mounts in a different way on WIN PCs as former devices. There is no „normal“ drive letter like E: or D:, but in my case „u1“. And you cannot execute some commands like „search for *.kmtf“. I‘m no specialist in the fields of WIN operating system.
Maybe some one else can explain?  ?

But it is possible to copy files from and to the device like openMTBmaps. (WIN)

  • After connecting E1050 to a laptop with WIN10, the device entered STORAGE mode and I can browse filters and files.

  • And then ther is a Mapthemes folder still?

    Thanks.

  • I don't have a Mapthemes folder even though I have "hidden items" enabled.

  • Did you mean you did not find it under Garmin folder, or just looked for it in the root directory?

If so Garmin decided to not let us play with formatting it, maybe next time we should do it undercovered ;;-)

  • As a whole I think this is a solid improvement over its predessor, my only complaint is the tones used for turn by turn navigation nye on impossible to hear in good weather but on a wet/windy day you can’t hear anything seems relate to the pitch used as on notifications of a sharp bend etc it works well?.

  • Location symbol (VEHICLE), better but not best, it isn't as big as the "marketing" screenshots on Garmin sites pretend it is, scaled down to actual screen size its a missed opportunity?

  • Did my first ride last night to an event in central London and back. Navigation on the way there was excellent, albeit on a rather straightforward track through the centre of the city. The audible guidance was excellent in comparison to my previous Edge 1040 Solar. The screen was easy to see at all times and I could focus on enjoying the ride.

It was pouring down on the way back and I got pretty soaked. The 1050 had zero issues handling the rain and visibility in the dark was excellent. The rain drops had little to no effect on the screen. I purposefully veered off the suggested path a few times and, unlike the previous model, the cycling computer did not keep nagging me to make a u-turn for ages but instead accepted I have taken another path.

This was a big issue for me prior and I am glad to see the change in behaviour here. Finally, I had no issues with sensors dropping out with my power meter, front light and radar staying connected throughout. I used my Epix Gen 2 Pro as a HR monitor on the way back and had no issues with that either. A promising start!

EDIT: gradient lag seems to be a thing of the past- found the indicator to be very responsive

  • I am currently having a 1030 Plus, very happy with it but I am disappointed in not having USB-C, or having the possibilty to change and configure my 1030 Plus via Garmin Connect

Would you guys say that an upgrade from a 1030 Plus to a 1050 is worth it or go for 1040 instead?

Or maybe just stick with the 1030 Plus, as it is not a bad device.

  • I own a 1040 for 2y now, basically when it came out. It now has most of the features that the 1050 has despite the speaker and the new UI. I ordered a 1050, tested it for a day and did not find enough reasons that justified the expense. It is even bulkier and heavier which I did not like. If I were you my personal choice would be buying a 1040, There were a couple of things that annoyed me. For instance: on the 1040 I have only two tones: 1) the Varia Radar and 2) when I shift do the smallest / biggest cog on my Di2. On the 1050 that seemed not to work anymore. At least not immediately. After 10 min  of fiddling around with the settings I gave up. To get an audio alarm from the Varia there were other audio notifications as well. The graphics of my Di2 gears was more condensed on the 1050 wasting a lot of space and leading to worse legibility (I'm 60 now and this is important to me). I have to say that I am extremely happy with my 1040. I was hoping for a 1050 that was actually a bit smaller and not bulkier.
