Garmin 1040 in 2025 ?

Would you still recommend buying the 1040 in 2025,  just sold my Garmin 840 because it was difficult to read the small text and found the map cramped on such a small screen.

Looked at the new 850 but still think the screen would be too small for my eyesight plus concerned about the battery life on long rides.  As for the 1050 it’s just too expensive for my needs.

  • I had a Garmin Edge Explore 2. Everything about it suited me, but there were some nuances with the profiles. I thought for a long time about whether to get the Garmin Edge 1040, Garmin Edge 1050, or Garmin Edge 850. I took the Garmin Edge 1040. It has a metal mount and great battery life without any brightness 'dances' (hassles/workarounds). It's totally worth it. I always have my mobile phone with me, with a good screen and quick tips on what and where.

  • 1040 still be good in 2025. BUT if you already have it. I strongly do not recomend to buy any og xx40 serias as new. Just because of the outdated hardware platform. 1050 alreay has new more powefull CPU.

And yes. 1040 FW bring all (almost)  1050 features, but 1040 became more and more laggy after avery new update. It still usable but simple not works as fast as 1050

  • I bought a Garmin Edge 850 and it's really fast. I rarely use the navigation feature and rarely ride for 8-10 hours, but I can always recharge the device because my bike light supports USB charging and there is a charging cable in my tool box. Also i have new Garmin Edge 1040, i have time for testing and leave one of them.

  • That is a valid point. Also new features means new bugs. At some point I whish they stop adding new features and just remove bugs.....it was nearly perfectly stable before they introduced all the groupride features etc. from the 1050.

  • Yes, if I like the Garmin Edge 850, I will buy the Garmin Edge 1050 in the future, or if the Garmin Edge 1060 comes out.

  • Request for update, how has your testing of the two gone? Going back and forth myself between the 850 and 1040.
