Garmin 1040 in 2025 ?

Would you still recommend buying the 1040 in 2025,  just sold my Garmin 840 because it was difficult to read the small text and found the map cramped on such a small screen.

Looked at the new 850 but still think the screen would be too small for my eyesight plus concerned about the battery life on long rides.  As for the 1050 it’s just too expensive for my needs.

  • Unless you ride for 24 hours straight, the 1050 isn't going to leave you stranded. I've been getting 30+ hours on a charge on mine.  The "demanding use" estimate of 20 hours assumes using navigation for that entire time.  When I'm riding for pleasure or fitness, I don't need navigation, and I assume that's true for most other riders. I carry my 1040 in my pocket for backup, and use battery save mode.  It takes me weeks before I really need to charge the 1040....

  • Not pleased with my 1040 compared with the 1030. Too many problems

  • Well, I hope so!  This is my first cycle computer since my old Cateye on my 1990 Diamondback Centurion Master TG.  I rode that for 30 years and quite riding about 25 years ago.  Just got a new road bike and ebike this past summer, and the 1040 was going for $300 in the last hours of Big Deal Days.  I like the larger touchscreen.

  • That's a great deal! I hope you enjoy both the riding and the bike computer!

Personally, I'm satisfied with the 1040 and prefer it to my Wahoo Elemnt Bolt V1, which gave me more issues despite having far less functionality.

  • Battery life on the 1050 is a non-issue for me.  I do almost daily rides, but in the 1 to 3 hour range.  Since I rarely use navigation (I do rides I've done dozens or even hundreds of time before), I get 30+ hours between charges.  If I set off to ride a century, say from Orange County CA to San Diego, and use navigation, and spend 6 - 7 hours riding, I wouldn't use even 50% of the battery.

That said, if I were going to go on a multiple day riding adventure, I think I'd use my 1040, especially if I wasn't sure I could charge my Edge some of the days.

I have the horribly overpriced external battery pack, which I could carry along to double the life of the Edge. (It was $140 when I bought mine, and now costs $180 without even a change from micro USB.  It has 3100 mAh. A lipstick battery pack with 5000 mAh can be purchased for less than $13.)

  • I solved glare problem by getting matte protector screen. Yes it makes image tiny bit less sharp but Inever look at my Edge 1040 from really close to notice. And on a bike whilst riding - zerro difference in sharpness but readability 10 times better.

  • Hi, you riding with new 1040?

  • Yeah, can't fault it . Working as expected nice big display, good battery life and no software issues.

  • Don't you regret taking a two-year model? Not 1050?

  • I dont think its worth it , it all depends what you need it for my main reason was the larger display on the 1040. You can get the 1040 for £339 now .
