Issues with Connecting Garmin Edge 1040 After Update to Firmware Version 26.18

Hello,

I’ve recently purchased a Garmin Edge 1040, which arrived yesterday. After connecting it to Garmin Express, I updated the maps and firmware to version 26.18. However, after the update and restart, the device is no longer recognized by Garmin Express.

The device switches to "mass storage mode" on the display, but it is not detected by either my MacBook or Windows PC. I’ve tried resetting the device, using different cables, and testing on different operating systems (macOS and Windows), but none of these steps resolved the issue.

Additionally, after the update, the map no longer appears in navigation mode, and when attempting to access navigation, I receive the error: "Some navigation features may not work correctly in this area due to missing map coverage."

The device has only been in use for one day, and it is now nonfunctional. Any advice or suggestions on how to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

  • I'll just add my voice to the question. Although my Egde 1040 is 1 year old, it did a great job last year. After hibernation, I recharged it and then I was asked to do a firmware update. Now I currently have the 26.18 on it and it is not recognized on the Mac, this is supposed to be due to the MTP protocol and can be solved with a third-party provider, but that didn't work for me either. And since my Windows desktop is already very old and I have rarely used it, I started up a fresh notebook with Windows 11 today. But nothing happens here either. The Garmin keeps switching from MTP mode to normal mode, which I can hear from the detection noises and see in the device manager. A constant change of recognition. Before this change I was very happy with this device, even though it was expensive, but now I can't even connect with my Windows notebook. Really modest....

How to Install Beta Firmware on Garmin Edge 1040 When Garmin Express Is Not Working

If you have a Garmin Edge 1040 and want to install a firmware update to a beta version but are having trouble with Garmin Express, this guide will help you resolve the issue and successfully install the beta firmware.

    Steps to Install Beta Firmware:

    1. Sign Up for the Garmin Beta Program

      • Visit the official Garmin website and sign up for the Garmin Beta Program. This will give you access to beta firmware versions that Garmin is testing before official release.

    2. Connect Your Garmin Edge 1040 to Your Phone via Garmin Connect

      • Make sure you have the Garmin Connect app installed on your phone.

      • Connect your Garmin Edge 1040 to the Garmin Connect app via Bluetooth (ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone).

    3. Check for Updates Directly on the Garmin Edge 1040 Device:

      • On the Garmin Edge 1040, go to System > About > Check For Update.

      • Select the option to check for updates.

    4. Check for Updates via Bluetooth (Not Wi-Fi)

      • Important: Instead of using Wi-Fi (which might not work), use Bluetooth to search for and download the update.

      • If the download fails initially, the second attempt might succeed.

    5. Download and Install the Beta Firmware

      • After successfully downloading the beta firmware on the device, an installation prompt will appear.

      • Install the update according to the on-screen instructions.

    6. Check Garmin Express

      • After the update installation, Garmin Express should now recognize the device.

      • Test to ensure Garmin Express now correctly detects the device and that the latest firmware version is installed.

    Common Issues and Solutions:

    • Issue with downloading the update: If the update only partially downloads or shows an error, try downloading it again. This could be due to a temporary connection issue via Bluetooth.

    • Problems with Garmin Express: If Garmin Express still doesn't work, try running the application as administrator or restart your computer.

    Conclusion

This guide demonstrates how to successfully install beta firmware on the Garmin Edge 1040 even when Garmin Express is not working properly. By following these steps and using Bluetooth to download the update, you should be able to resolve connection issues and successfully install the desired firmware version.
