Can this really still be an issue in 2025?? Course Points, WayPoints, POI

OK, this seems like it should be far simpler than it actually appears to be.

Route created in RWGPS. Export > GPX with POI

Firstly, even tyring to get that route to import in to GC is hilarious. Sometimes, it *might* work. Other times, it just sits there and thinks about it.

The simplicity of what I am trying to achieve is the most frustrating part.

Let's say on RWGPS I place a shop, or store, or water stop 200m further on from a turn that I need to take. Why, oh why, oh why, can't that simply appear on the map screen when I get there? It's like Garmin just refuses to show anything that isn't on the course (except it's own useless items like church, school, etc).

I've tried using the RWGPS app on the Edge = meh

I've tried exporting as Fit = meh

I've tried exporting as TCX = meh

The absolute closest I've got it export GPX on RWGPS, import to GPXStudio, Update the POI with meaningful icon, export as GPX. Then load that into the "NewFiles" on the Garmin unit.

I hoped this is what GRouteLoader would solve for me too but I can't seem to get that to work either.

Basically, I want a meaningful icon of a POI of interest that I define, whether it's on the course or not.

The IQ environment is very restricted and sandboxed.

IQ programs can only download FIT files. What GRouteLoader does (or what any IQ program would do) is the same as what you do manually with FIT course files and behaves the same way.

The RWGPS app is also restricted in what it can do.

The limitation is all on Garmin.

You won’t get this with the POIs in the course file. It’s very, very unlikely Garmin is going to change it. There is little point in moaning about it.

While what you want isn’t unreasonable, there isn’t a strong motivation for Garmin to do anything about it.

  • This is the frustrating part. If I take the export from GPXstudio and place the gpx into New files, when the Garmin loads and I click on the route, I can then fully browse the course and see ALL of the information I've added, whether it's on the course or not. How this doesn't translate to when I'm actually riding the route, I'll never know!!

  • The POIs in the GPX file get added to the locations list. The items on the location list are displayed on the map. So, when you are browsing the course, you see the location items.

How this doesn't translate to when I'm actually riding the route, I'll never know!!

I don’t know what you mean here.

  • So, all the items appear on the map, but when I click "ride" and actually start riding, the POIs that I could see on the map (off route) no longer appear.

  • Hmm.

On the 1030+ (the 1030, 800, and others), locations are always displayed on the map (including when viewing the course and when using the course for navigation).

I don’t have a 1040 to try but I’d be somewhat surprised if that behaved any differently.

Note that locations are never “on the route” (they are separate from the course wherever they happen to be located).

Your POIs should be showing up in the locations list. You should be referring to these on the device as “locations” (not “items” or “POI”s).

    ====================

Note that the FIT and TCX files won’t have the POI data at all. At least, these files from RWGPS won’t have this data.

  • So, assume the route in RWGPS has poi/location/whatever, both on and off route, I export this in what format to ensure those "locations" come over to the 1040 as locations? GPX and list poi as waypoints? I saw you mentioned in another thread that I should export two files and load them in separately.

    Try it.

  • I don't use POI. Try custom cue. Works perfectly for me with ridewithgps tcx files.

    Unhelpful.

He’s wants points off the course to be displayed.

Course points (what you are calling “custom cues”) won’t work for that.
