Can this really still be an issue in 2025?? Course Points, WayPoints, POI

OK, this seems like it should be far simpler than it actually appears to be.

Route created in RWGPS. Export > GPX with POI

Firstly, even tyring to get that route to import in to GC is hilarious. Sometimes, it *might* work. Other times, it just sits there and thinks about it.

The simplicity of what I am trying to achieve is the most frustrating part.

Let's say on RWGPS I place a shop, or store, or water stop 200m further on from a turn that I need to take. Why, oh why, oh why, can't that simply appear on the map screen when I get there? It's like Garmin just refuses to show anything that isn't on the course (except it's own useless items like church, school, etc).

I've tried using the RWGPS app on the Edge = meh

I've tried exporting as Fit = meh

I've tried exporting as TCX = meh

The absolute closest I've got it export GPX on RWGPS, import to GPXStudio, Update the POI with meaningful icon, export as GPX. Then load that into the "NewFiles" on the Garmin unit.

I hoped this is what GRouteLoader would solve for me too but I can't seem to get that to work either.

Basically, I want a meaningful icon of a POI of interest that I define, whether it's on the course or not.

  • For my purposes I don't add locations to a route that I don't intend to ride to or by. When you add a custom cue to a ridewithgps route they show up in the cue list along with their distance along the way. Maybe thinking of them differently might be useful to the OP.

  • What @bbrannon is saying is to use “course points” instead of POIs.

”Course points” are “waypoints” on the course.

Usually, these are turn instructions but they can be other things (there’s a limited number of different types).

The idea would be add a course points on the course for your POI off the course. (You could, of course, use both.)

    =======================

RWGPS lets you add custom cuesheet items (you might need a paid subscription to add them).

RWGPS will write them out in FIT or TCX files.

You can also add them in Garmin Connect.

The course points show up as magenta icons on the course. They also will show up on the “course point” page (as a list).

These are an attribute of the course and you can change whether they are displayed or not.

One issue is that you’ll also get (generally) course points for every turn (in addition to your customers).

  • In GC it says course points can only be displayed on the route (not off it).

I've done the export of gpx with poi installed to Edge then reboot, then added the fit file with the same name, reboot. I now have two courses showing, their names are actually slightly differeShrug tone1I assume this is because the name element in the gpx XML can be different to the filename. In any case, 2 courses now show, the locations list is updated, but if I select either course, they boShrug tone1how the off route points. So I'm unsure why I had to load both into the Edge Shrug tone1‍♂️Joy

I said this. Course points are points on the course path.

Delete the course you don’t want.

If the course you get with the locations is good enough for you, you don’t need to load both.

If the course file included with the POIs isn’t good enough, you’ll need to delete it. And use the course you want to use.

  • RWGPS won't let me add a custom cue off of the course. And there is no "course point" option in RWGPS Disappointed

Wait, you mean at or near the off course point, add a custom cue to detail the off course location (shop 200m further on than the turn, for example)

  • “Custom cues” in RWGPS are “course points” (on the device). “Course points” are on the course path.

”POIs” in RWGPS are “locations” (on the device). These are not related to courses at all.

This is the way this works. You’ll have to deal with how it works.

(This is a lot of work.)

  • Wait, you mean at or near the off course point, add a custom cue to detail the off course location (shop 200m further on than the turn, for example)

Yes. Add a course point “next to” the POI.

(Don’t call the POI an “off course point”.)

  • I've accepted my fate and found a way that I'm happy with. Open in RWGPS, delete all cues, export as GPX track with POI as Waypoints, open in GPXstudio to edit the icons to something more meaningful (not actually required), import into edge through New files folder. I removed all the cues from the RWGPS route as they were just noise. And often, resulted in a million extra arrow icons on the screen, with completely inaccurate cues. When browsing the route on the Edge 1040, I can see all the POI (on and off course) and they've all been added to the saved locations. It will have to do.
